Need Savage target action milled for DBM .

Just wondering if someone could recommend a good smith that could mill the slot in the bottom of my Savage single shot action to make it a repeater ?

Theres also the issue of the centre action bolt, which you would lose, and dont forget that the thread on the tenon is 'large shank', Is the action diameter the same, as say the Model 10? - Thinking about stock/chassis compatibility. Thinking out loud, you understand!

I’ve got a 10 and 12 action , both DBM . They shoot just as good as the target action . Outside dia. Is same , they all drop right into a v block stock . I’ve already got a brand new large shank barrel mounted , so instead of trading a barrel and action , it makes sense to me to just mill the slot .

No worries. Like i said, thinking out loud. I do like Savages - I have a 10 in a Choate varmint stock. Away being converted to 6mm SLR right now. I did toy with buying a single shot, but went with a Barnard instead. Given that you have a 10 with the correct gap milled in to copy, I would have thought that any good machinist could do the job on the single shot? Best of luck.

Are u ready for this ? I’m a Supervisor in a CNC Aerospace machine shop with 40 years machining experience . Lol ! You’re right, I could do it , but it makes me nervous . One slip and there goes my action . You never know , I might give it a whirl . It’s just a slot right ? Yea , famous last words . Lol

Single shot actions are fewer and farther in between. If it was me, I'd be looking for a repeater action and keeping my single shots.

Sell the action then buy the LRPV if Northland has one. Then you will have a large shank receiver(target action) with a detachable mag.

If I had that kind of experience and didn’t feel comfortable doing it myself, I would feel less comfortable with someone else doing it

I see what you’re saying , that’s why the few gunsmiths I have talked with the first thing I ask is if they have ever done one . My 40 years is as a Machinist, not a gunsmith . I know people consider it the same but it’s really not . If I program a part and it comes out wrong I can grab another piece of stock and start over . Not possible with a $550 action . I know it’s not that much , but I work long hours for my money and don’t want to screw it up . I’m going to give it a whirl . I’ll use a tube of aluminum the same size as action to do a first piece . If it comes out good well there you go !

I’ve already got a brand new stainless 30” tube for my stainless action . Pretty sure LRPV is Black ! No way can I have a SST barrel with a black action ! That’s Blasphemy! Lol

With the name Okuma, I figured you were in the business. I thought maybe you were young and just an operator. With 40 years you may predate CNC, unless you grew up on paper tape.

I grew up on manual Bridgeport mills and manual lathes . Then came tape , Then CNCs.
