A rifle for 1000 yds ?

I shoot a 17lbs gun in 300WSM with a brake on it. I can honestly say if I am on my game the gun is absolutely capable of winning any matc
Dragman- Could you give some barrel specs on that 300WSM? Strait Taper?
Length? Twist? Thanks

Well I have had 7-8 that i would put in that category.
My go too 300WSM set up is:
HV contour or MTU heavier not straight since i have to stay 17lbs and under
I like the radial brake
10 twist .238 freebore and .338 neck I like them around 28-29" depending on action and stock for balance.

Has anyone you know, tried a 6.5 x 55 Swede with, the Shoulder angle blown out, to 35* ?
Lapua Brass, is available, I believe and the 156 grain Berger, Twisted "right", would be a good Candidate,..
I think
I’ve been shooting a 6.5x55 Ackley with 156’s for F Class the last couple years and it shoots as well as anything. And it’s been very easy to load for and keep in tune.

I have seen many go at around 500 rounds. They just wouldn't win at 1000 yard BR. Matt
Not going to argue with you Matt. But the last year I shot 1000 yd br with a 243 I did well with it. Is it the best cartridge for 1000 yd, no. But it will work and it can do very well. As far as 500 rnds goes. I have had too many 243 bbls to believe that.

I am not a long range shooter or hunter, so we have a 1 mile range fairly close. I'm doing a switch barrel in 300&338 RUM. It will have a 26" 338 and a 30" 300 barrel. Yes it will have a good muzzle brake. In a long wait for a D'Arcy Echols hunting stock and a 2.5X-25X March scope.
Not for competition, just I don't have one.

I'm building a prone sling rifle and just asked myself the same question: what cartridge? My current 1,000 yard rifle is an Alex Sitman (Master Class Stocks)/Warner Tool Company prone gun that has about used up its .300 WSM barrel which is a great shooter in its own right. But I've broken too many rear sight diopters under the heavy recoil, so I'm looking for a lighter bullet.

I've seen the record scores the Army Shooting Team has been posting for the last several years with the 7mm RSAUM, so I was leaning towards that. Then, I came across an RSAUM derivative in the 7mm Sherman Short Mag (7SS) which has me flat-out intrigued. So, I'm putting one together. Now, if I can just find some Vihta Vuori N165 powder available ANYWHERE, I'll be in business!

I too am of the 6 BRA and 300 WSM for 1k BR crowd. Unless the conditions are bad, the 6BRA is very hard to beat in a light gun. In fact, I have seen 6 BRA light guns beat many a true heavy gun in the heavy class.

The problem with the 300 WSM in a light gun is the recoil moves the rifle a lot more that it does a 6--even when the 300 WSM is braked, and that added recoil slows you down. When you slow down your groups usually open up unless the conditions are very good. If the conditions are very good then the 6 BRA has the advantage.....

Now I have both 6 BRA and 300 WSM barrels for both my light gun and my heavy gun (HG still needs a stock). Once I finish my HG the plan is to shoot the 6 BRA in LG and the 300 WSM in heavy.

Now if I was still shooting with the Tucson crowd, the 300 WSM would be my go to in both light and heavy. I'd use the 6 BRA barrels only when conditions were very good, which doesn't happen often in Tucson.

Of course, if one has an exceptional 300 WSM and a mediocre 6 BRA, then the 300 would be the better choice. But with guns that are equally good, the 6 usually has the advantage.

The one time in life when short, fat with a long neck is more beautiful than long & lean and built for speed..... in my experience anyway!
Your description reminds me of years ago when they would say what made the best fighter pilot was short, fat, high blood pressure and smokes because they could pull the most g's without blacking out. I never was sure if that was a fact or just a excuse to party hard.

I'll be the first I guess.....

I do quite well with both my 6mm and 6.5 Creedmoor at 600 and 1000 yds.

1 MOA on both calibers.

I started with a 6.5-06imp and it was a great 1000 chambering and a real barrel eater, then the 6bra that met ALL my expectations & now, wanting to settle on one gun & chambering just to simplify my life I am running a 300wsm with Berger 210VLD Hunting and have a very easy rifle to tune with good barrel life that is a pleasure to shoot. I understand the utility of running them down there as fast as you can shooting 1K and have done that with quality 2 port & drop port actions. I am finding it more enjoyable to take a little more time recognizing conditions and trying to stay in them. You get a lot of time to get them down there and I find myself using a bit more of it these days..........But I am & remain pretty much a mid to high-pack shooter that has spent time in the basement as well......:)

Regards
Rick
