silicon or oil rag ?

which is preferred or better for wiping own your guns ?
Silicone really isn't a very good rust preventive. I used an oil rag for many years, however the rag just didn't get into all the places to lightly coat oil. So I switched to a cheap paint brush (not much more than a chip brush), and I can control how much oil I apply and get it into small recesses I can't with a rag.

A safe queen gets the, store bought treated rag wipe off. With certain reservations on wood stocks.

The DD's(daily driver) get mobile one, just short of slathering along with compressed air, assorted brushes, and yes an occasional rinse with the garden hose. But these are bolt action, drag them through the mud/rain,killing machines. Scopes,in this instance, need WAY more careful handling. No "running" water and positively,no compressed air.

Good luck with your project.

My favorite way to wipe down a gun is to spray it with an aerosol then use a soft lightly oiled paper towel to wipe off the excess.

A couple good coats of quality car wax allow water to bead up and run off. It doesn’t rub off when sliding your rifle in and out of a sleeve or case either.

Eezox Its very thin and easy to apply and to date in tests (here)is the best rust preventative. Personally I just use an old T-shirt rag

I do not read where the first part of the question was addressed, so I will. Never will I knowingly have any products containing silicone in my house vehicles or shop. The reason being silicone's penchant for many finishing or refinishing jobs being ruined by silicone's presence some time past. Traces of that material will haunt you, regardless. My narrow world-view places silicone very near WD-40 in the "Do not use on firearms" list. I also realize my house is most likely full of the stuff.
We all have our refusal points, now you all know one of mine.

I will pile on to prior comments. Renaissance Wax is by far the best protectant for both the wood and metal of your guns. RW also lasts a very long time and is very easy to apply. In hot humid climates like I am in, oil attracts dust and dust attracts moisture. Silicone based products will invade wood finishes and potentially damage them. Once silicone invades the wood, it is impossible to remove.

Absolutely. However he failed to evaluate the best corrosion preventative on the market. It comes as a straight oil or as a foamy spray that gets into every nook and cranny. Only the slightest bit of odor. I first got into it in offshore marine applications 30 years ago.

Well I have completely forgotten about corrosion block I am originally from Florida and was boating and fishing my entire life when I lived there that is a great product

I make my own equivalent of Corrosion Block with a mix of 70-90% of ATF and 10-30% of Naphtha, depending on how thin a coat of lubricant you want. Once you read the Safety Data Sheet on these products it is easy to replicate at a much lower cost.
