Question on buying from member with no history

How much participation do they do in topics of interest?
One of the factors I use.
Cant remember who it was but a week ago I left a members 1st trader feedback for them.
Everyone here started from zero.

Proceed with caution. Find a Gun Store close to the seller that might help with the exchange. It may cost a little more but it’s better than losing. Maybe find a known member that’s close to the seller?

One can always ask. But if doubting the seller then the seller is put in a position to doubt the buyer.

Ask for dated pictures (like a sticky note with the date on the product)
3rd party, like a escrow, as mentioned earlier but I don't know that will work. Good idea.
Depending on the dollar amount, take the chance & listen to your gut feel.

There was a member that was selling a Nightforce. The price was really good but he did not post real pictures. After pressing him for puctures he got lost.

A good start is by simply talking or texting, then get an address and look them up on Google Maps. Have them send pics via text that show details you ask for. Be specific, that way you eliminate possible use of standard pics available over the net. This presumes you're the buyer, not the seller.

Good advice about asking about a gun store the seller might use to broker a deal. Make sure the store has a website and then call them to confirm the possible exchange. Introduce yourself and get a copy of their FFL if possible.

You can learn a lot just by typing a few keys on your computer.

Talk on the phone. In my experience a scammer rarely holds a coherent conversation in fluent English and is knowledgeable about what they’re selling.

Is the seller a paying member? Talk on the phone, ask for pics that can't be not his, ask them to ship the item before payment is sent. Trust and verify everything. We all start somewhere, all start with no history.

I saw an item recently that I wanted. The seller had only been a member here a very short time. He had no trader history and basically no posts. I contacted via PM, we discussed a deal and I decided to purchase.
He sent me his payment info. It was a red flag; PO Box and had no PP so he wanted a money order. We discussed it some more and I decided to go ahead. Any way, I sent a personal check to the PO Box. Apparently he shipped the dies right away because I had them in a few days so I went ahead and left him positive feedback.

The first time I sold on here the buyer asked me to take a photo of the item by the front door of my house, and he could see it was the same as the house at that address in Google Maps street view, which let him see that at least I lived where I was asking him to mail the payment.

I've done deals in the past where I found a trusted member close to them that could verify they are indeed a valid shooter and not some scammer just snatching pics from the net.
Not related to shooting but a good friend of mine actually found his own Goldwing for sale,.. not by him either. Funny thing was it was not even for sale, go figure!

See if he has a friend that's been a member here for a while
that will vouch for him.
