BUT, I still think you should be a gold member to sell anything over a hundred bucks..

Vermin would pay the $50, if they knew it could net them $1,000 or more.
How about any big ticket items, the buyer can bring in a couple members of his choosing to help with the purchase. One member could be FBI GUY and the other LOCAL COP?

I'm glad I was able to buy a few items after I had joined, w/o any trader history, then sell a few items, BEFORE contributing. I like this group and the opportunities it provides, and I believe it is run very well, and that things should remain like they are.
Someone dropped their guard and got scammed. Was it "greed" or could it have been "desperation" (seeing an opportunity to buy and flip, use the profit to pay a bill), because different people are in different situations.
It's not the first time, and surely won't be the last.
I think reminding people to be careful and use those techniques to prove it is legit is the best thing to do.
That's just my 2 cents. (wheat pennies)

I make it a point to at least go around the block and do
some checking. In most cases they are known shooters
and on multiple sites. The mention of being at last a Silver
member may be a good thing. One of the reasons I went
gold was for easier trading with other members when the
time comes.

For piece of mind, this being a FELONY, I would at least have charges pressed against the culprits and branded by every enforcement agency, who knows the MO, these people use.
The theft is one felony, using the mail system, brings in the criminal division of the Postal Service,
Using the internet for fraud, brings in a special division of the FBI
When you know, you have done all you can do, to prevent others from being scammed, you may find some solace.

Good luck with any of that. Too small of an amount of money and too many scammers to allocate scarce resources. Criminals are using the web to steal tens of millions of dollars at a time. That's where their efforts are.
