I usually take a 6" gong to the range with me and set it up at 300 yards to have something to plink at while letting the barrel cool on whatever I'm doing load work on. The club I belong to doesn't have steel set up , so if there's one there, it belongs to somebody that's shooting. A couple weeks ago, we had a really nice afternoon with NO wind. Not an everyday event in the panhandle of Texas. It just so happened to be on a Sunday afternoon. I never go to the range on weekends, if you go during the week, there might be one or two other shooters there, but usually you'll have the range to yourself. I bit the bullet, loaded up and went. Range was busy but not packed. I set up a couple targets and the gong at 300. Shot a few strings, a cease fire was called and I went down to change paper. When I got back to the line, we had a new shooter. 20 something looking dude with his girlfriend/significant other had set up right in the middle of the 10 benches we have. Both wearing BDU's, even had boonie hats on. He had set up a big black bolt action rifle with a brake, found out later it was a Savage 110 in 300 Win Mag. I had a .223 to plink at steel with, line went hot, I loaded a round and was about to pull the trigger and all hell broke loose. BOOM! I happened to see a splash in the berm about 2 foot above and to the right of my steel. Sammy Sniper is shooting at my steel. I looked down the line and gf/so is telling Sammy where he shot. He adjusts scope. BOOM! Low and left. BOOM! High and left. I got on my rifle and waited. BOOM! Just over the steel and I shot as fast as I could after seeing his shot. RING!!!! GF/SO squeals with joy. He loads another and I do too. BOOM! and I shoot, RING! GF/SO squeals. This went on for 10 or so shots. He's shooting about 6 inches over. At this point I had a headache and all I could take of the brake, most everybody else had left or had moved away from the line. I walked down and ask what he was shooting. I didn't know I knew so little about a "sniper gun" as he called it. I threw out a challenge. I bet him 5 bucks he couldn't hit that round thing down at 300. Sammy bites. BOOM!! silence.... Sammy and GF/SO look at each other in disbelief. I pipe up, double or nothing? Sammy throws in another round. BOOM!! silence. The look on the dudes face was priceless. I chuckle. Sammy looks pissed. Double or nothing again? He bites again. BOOM! silence yet again. GF/SO yells at him, "Stop, that's 20 bucks"! I have to give her credit, she at least could count. To this young mans credit, he stood up, took a 20 out of his billfold and handed it to me. I took it, looked at it and handed it back to him. I explained that was my gong you were shooting at, handed him his 20 back and told him to buy his own. I packed up my stuff and left. Still makes me laugh.
