221 Fireball

I have a Kimber Ultra Varmint in 221 Fireball that I bought when Kimber of Oregon went out of business about 1990. It is a repeater which not many were made. Love it.

Bought an old savage single shot and converted it to 221. Its has made a few prairie dog trips. Also a new in the box 700 classic sits in the safe. Couldn’t bring myself to pull the barrel off a new gun to convert to a Vartarg.

don't be afraid to shoot that 700 classic @73 years I can't do mine justice but it's the most consistent shooting factory barreled rifle I own. most days I bench it it will easily shoot .5 moa. acc. 2015 and 50 grain sierra blitz @ 3000 fps.

Have 2 now, both ackeyized. One shoots 40s single shot and the other shoots heavies out of a DBM Origin action. Both are an absolute joy to shoot and I was just looking around yesterday at possibly doing a 20-221 AI.

I wish Lapua hadn't discontinued the brass.
I got one of these as well

Two 221FB's here, a Cooper M38 and a CZ 527 American. The Cooper shoots very well with it's HB, but my little CZ will shoot the 40gr NBT in the .3's....not bad for a light sporter barrel.

The Cooper always shoots under .25" with RL-7 and the same bullet, and is a pure joy on ground squirrels or rock chucks.

My Cooper Phoenix 221FB after a good morning having her way with some local rock chucks:

A great little caliber, much underrated and ignored by the general shooting crowd. I built my first one on a Sako L461 back in 1981.....wish I still had it.

Rick In Oregon, You really bring great memories back to me. I had a great Cooper 221 FB and my CZ shot right along side of the Cooper so I sold the Cooper. Today missing that Cooper but loving that CZ 527. Got to love the little 221 FB

Well, you can thank good old Remington for that. They had the poorest Marketing department in the industry.
While buying a scope for my .221 LVSF, the guy behind the counter remarked to me that a Remington sales rep once told him the company had to eat the cost of a bunch of those Fireballs they made that didn’t sell. I’d just bought mine for a good price after it had been on display at the local Gander Mtn. for two years.

Folks had been after Remington for years to bring to 221FB back, especially in a rifle and when they did, you barely knew it even existed.

Back in the early 80's when I was a little boy my old man had a Ruger No. 3 in 22 Hornet that wouldn't shoot. He spent some money with Douglas and Fajen and afterwards had a beautiful 221 Fireball that looked more like a No. 1B with a curled tang. He and Mom got divorced in '86 when I was 10 and the ol 221 got sold off. Damn I'd love to have that rifle, lots of memoreis...
