Phase 1

Bear with me. Some of my nightmares take time to complete !!

As it is though; this part of a project allows a cold one or two, and
some tunes in the background. Joe Walsh got the nod......

Multi tasking several nightmares !! LOL The current plan
is to establish A type of magnum BR, and I do hate the term
magnum. Shortening my SA284 even more, I can set a given
length for longer range BR's. Right now I have the case to
be about 1/4" longer then a dasher, and of course being off
the Winchester .284, a lot bigger boiler room. The cases are
fully formed. and If trimmed right now, they would be a 30 cal.
Since I have several 7mm barrels in stock, I'll still stay with the
.284's for the time being. Bullets are going to be a problem, but
If it's viable, I'll be on the phone with some people. For fire forming,
and initial work ups Speer is sending me 600 flat based TNT's,
and probably the only ones on the planet......Lower part of the pic
is a 7.62x39 for comparison.

HeynFuj, we got more snow than you this time I am sorry to say. But, sounds like you just need to take the .243 wssm, open the neck up....and Bingo. Your there.

I was wondering how much gas you ran thru that snow blower !!
Good ol' Lake Erie had a high pressure hanging over it , and
blocked that storm that hit yinz. Woke up this morning with a
light dusting and 16 degrees. Going to be a bit Polar around here
for about a week......As for that 243 wssm ?? Wrong bolt face.
With my Win 284 cats, I have cases on hand, and die components
already established for forming. Waiting on Fedex to deliver
another .284 FL die for shortening. If all goes well, maybe break
it in at one of your match's down the road.

Hey Fuj we love having you. I hope your new wildcat works out for you. Talk about timing....boight a new snowblower this year to update my 15 yr old model. It was like going from a golf cart to a new Corvette. Good investment at the right time. Stay warm Fuj.

Is that what they call a false shoulder?
No it is not. I'm not changing a shoulder angle on a existing
cartridge or a slight lengthening. I'm just shortening the
existing profile of the .284 Winchester. I do multiple steps to
keep it as clean as possible. When done, my formed case
will be close, and need very little fire forming to finish it.

Fedex dropped of my FL die I need for modification. I was going
to make my own as I sometimes do but this is less time taken.
If the lathe is open, I'll have that done today, do a trial push, polish
as needed, and maybe trim up on Monday, or maybe Tuesday !!
That will depend on my Super Bowl hangover......LOL

Interestingly enuff, I have had a similar idea w the 284 case...a not overly fattened, slightly lengthened 6 BR w a .375 - .420 nk length. The turbulence point can make or break a bbl on leade growth.
My Bud's 6xc .400 nk is a testimony to that. And w an XCal bbl. Nodes at 3250, 107 Sierras.

Catting's been a hobby of mine for some time. That .284 case has
been a favorite of mine to work with. I did the final push last night
and will trim them to the original .284 spec. So as it is this cartridge
will be a very short .284 Winchester. I'll finish up and do a water
capacity check, and if time, get some pics posted up later this after-
noon

Phase one is coming to a close. For the time being. I'll
just call it my SA284 Feral Cat. Putting a BR monicker
on it just don't sing......So what we have here is a .284
Winchester, that has been shortened 1/2". All original
case numbers are exact. Water capacity (topped off) is
46.9 grs. In the pic is the new case next to my SA284.
The SA284 came from me shortening the parent .284
by .155 to facilitate use in the short actions and help load
long in the short magazines.

Phase 2 starts tomorrow. Dragman contacted me about
a scope order......"Road Trip" !!

So you are retaining the all of the forward dimensions and body taper, but a reduction in diameter as compared to a standard 284 for the same location from the case head, or am I misunderstanding your method?

After I shorten the die, I hone it slightly to bring back the base
dimension. Finish size on this case is .499. Short stepping
with a SAMMI reamer now gives me a good fitting chamber.

Danny Biggs was kind enough to sell me his short throated
reamer so I can move the time line up on this project. Barrel
though is still 2 months out on the order from Brux. The salvage
Bartlien I'll be using as a mule fire forming barrel is 2 weeks out
on the lathe schedule. Until I get the chamber reamed then a
casting, I can't do much more.
