NEED 223REM w/ 75gr AMAX HELP!

Ok boys here is the skinny on my situation.

I am strapped for time so I need a jump on load developement and I dont have time to mess around trying different components this is what I got. I need a good base line since I got maybe 2 shooting days to prep.

Well not quite the same but im shooting the 73gr eldm in a savage 1:9twist. Seated touching lands with 24gr varget. Federal 205 primers. Shoots verry good groups even at 300 yards. This was at 100 yards 5 shots kinda rushed. Hope this helps with a kinda starting charge weight. I am using federal brass i have found. No special brass prep.

Varget will probably run somewhere near 23.5 to 24.5 grains more or less.

The typical Service Rifle loads shown in that link are for 20" bbls, so your speed will look different.

You will also get away with a little more charge in cold weather but that may tend to get noisy in hot weather, so be careful if you run the load up on the higher end.

Varget tends to give a few clues in the ES/SD before things get ugly.

I would start 0.010 to 0.020 jump with a few tests for charge, and then run the sweep for depth while loaded long and seating at the range. If you settle on the best ES/SD and a fair group on the first day, and arrive with a long batch and your seating die tools for the second day, you should be able to arrive at the best depth and have enough to seat the rest at that depth and verify your dope at a few distances.

If I had to take a blind guess and go, I would load them up with 23.5 grains of Varget and run the seating depth test and not look back. Any of those primers will do fine for a first guess.

Not the Amax but I shot a few 75eldm's. I am traveling and brought these along as extras. I loaded 20 with 24.3 gr of Varget to try for group at 300. they shoot very good from my rifle. Hogdon shows 25 gr Varget max load. 24.3 gr in LC brass has light compression.

Loading another 100 this morning. Last 4 rounds at 300 in heavy mirage were inside 1.5".

My 75eldm 223rem load is 24gr Varget,win brass, cci450, and .018" jump. Got midrange HM card with this load. Brux 7 twist 30" hvy Palma bbl. SD 7.8. Fellow competitors using Fed 205m primers 77TMK 23.1 gr Varget to match Federal Gold Match load.

No expert in this particular load, but if I was running short on time, I would stick with BR-4 primers. I dont have a single gun that will not shot well with them. Might not be the best load, but I always get a load that will do the job.
No knock on any other primers!

So i think i narrowed it down to the the following

Lapua Brass .003 nk tension
CCI BR-4
IMR 8208XBR and Varget
75gr AMAZ

1.900 Base to o-give seating for a .020 jump
2.550 COAL Accurate Mag modified a little bit

working my way up to 24.0-25.0gr

Here is a load that shot very well in my factory Savage bvss. In good conditions it would shoot around 3/8’s inch at 100 and 1.5” at 300. I have shot at paper out to 600. Groups at 500 were around 2.5”.

23.7 gr Varget
205 m primer
75 gr amax
1.955 ogive
.0015 neck tension
Also, these bullets will hammer woodchucks at 500 yards from a .223

i am gonna bump it down to 24.5 for the 3000fps speed limit for PRS and call it a day.

Barrel length is 26” ( factory savage varmint, stainless ). That load ran around 2870 fps if I remember correctly.

24.6 Gr Varget, 75 Gr A-max , 2.488" COAL... Used this in a Savage 10 action with Shilen match barrel.. Worked Wonderfully..

Slightly different - 25.4 Varget, 69g Targex (NZ - but almost identical to Lapua) Seated close to the lands. 205m primer, ADI brass. 2865fps SD9. 26in factory Savage Mod 10. 1-9 twist. Must have a look at the 73g ELD-M.

When we first tested the 77 SMK for F Class in NZ, back in the 80's, we used some rifles built in Aussie by Omark. 7 twist, winchester 748 and Winchester primers. The old guys devided that it wasnt much use past 500 yds,. The loads were lightish....not. 77s were pushed well over 3000. Brass was reloadable, once, before the primer pockets enlarged. How times change.

Yea the new nosler RDFs have a much better BC, i am also looking minute of steel. So I really dont need FCLASS accuracy standards

I am running a 7 twist w/ amaxes they came to life at 3000fps.
