I just got a new barrel for my Gen 2 RPR in 6 Creedmoor. After a quick patching, shooting one fireforming load to make a Hornady Case Length Gauge body from and measuring some of my favorite bullets that I have used in my 6XC, I was left with a conundrum. Unlike my 6XC, Most of them don't have much shank in the neck when I hit the lands.
Examples:
Sierra 110 SMK 2.921 COL with ~.133 shank in the neck
Hornady 108 ELD-M 2.813 COL with ~.185 shank in the neck
Sierra 107 SMK 2.79 COL with ~,143 shank in the neck
Berger 105 Hybrid 2.852 COL with ~,146 shank in the neck
Sierra 95 TMK no usable shank in the neck at the lands
Forget anything lighter...
For those of you who have done similar measurements, has that been you experience as well?
I generally don't get the warm fuzzies without at least one caliber of shank in the neck. Of course, I don't necessarily need to load my rounds at or into the lands but in the case of the 108 ELD-M, that was where I got my best performance in my 6XC.
Up here, comfortable shooting weather won't return until late March or early April, so there's not much development going to take place until then. I don't enjoy shooting bundled up like the Michelin Man.
