I REMEMBER WHEN

I remember when back in the day if you could hit a beer can at 100 yds you were good to go.
You didn't shoot reloads as they were unreliable,so we thought.
You didn't shoot bolt actions because they didn't shoot fast enough.
You didn't go to the deer woods unless you had a pocket full of shells and you could barely keep your pants up from all the weight.
You didn't shoot anything less than a 270 because those big deer were hard to take down with anything less.Bigger was better.
You didn't talk to your buddies about missing a deer because you didn't get enough beer can practice.
You did ,however, talk if you got lucky and killed a deer with that beer can killer. Tack driver.

Fast forward 60 years

Now if you don't have a gun that shoots .25" at 100 yds ,you can't hit a deer or to some it seems.
Now we don't even bother with 100 yds and go to at least 300 yds.
Now we all shoot or own hand made custom reloads that we don't have primers and powder for.
Now all I shoot are bolt actions with the majority of others.
Now I shoot 6mm's for deer hunting and not fire breathers that belch out flames 2 ft.
Don't care who you are, sometimes you just miss. Lots of scopes and guns take the blame for that. You still don't tell your buddies.

Things have changed for sure in the last 60+ years.
Some things that have not changed. Still like to shoot beer cans, empty not full anymore, still like to deer hunt but it is getting less.
Paper shooting is getting more popular with me these days. Now if all the targets shot are not in the 0's or 1's,something is wrong with scope or gun. This don't happen with me too much, the 0's and 1's.

Things do change.Seems like the more they change the more they stay the same.

I remember when I put a .22 in the back seat with a box of rounds, now I had to buy a pick up truck to haul it to the range.

I remember we would all bring our guns to school to show our buddies. We never thought about shooting the kids...sometimes a teacher would bring one as well. I remember nailing pieces of scrap lumber on the side of a tree to make it easier to climb with a rifle on your back...didn’t have enough money to buy 2 16 foot pieces to make a ladder! I remember the “widow maker” Baker climbing stands when they came out. Never used a safety harness until many years later. I remember (14-15 yrs old) walking to my stand 30-45 minutes before shooting light and walking into a covey of quail...that will make you shit your pants! Now I don’t even get to my stand until it’s shooting light.

I remember when you'd put bread bags over your socks to
try and keep your feet dry. And it never got to cold to stay out all day.
I remember the bread sacks very well.
One year I went all out and bought a set of coveralls that were bright red, that was before we had to wear Hunter Orange.
I remember walking into the woods in total darkness, wadeing across the small creek and through the brush with frost or after it had rained and the limbs that slapped you in the face were cold and wet.

I remember selling the most magazine subscriptions in high school for the FFA fundraiser. Mr. McCoy, the shop teacher and FFA sponsor, handed me the grand prize of a new Remington 870 Wingmaster. I was the proudest kid toting that shotgun on the school bus that afternoon.

I remember when us boys had serious debate on whether of not to put a scope on our .22. The prevailing thought was that a scope would ruin you for any serious aiming for the rest of your life.

It was mostly a moot point since few of us could afford a scope, and most of our .22s weren't drilled, tapped, or grooved to accept scope mounts.;) jd
