Public Gun Range Amazement

There was many a comment on this thread with great insight and wisdom. Much of this destruction
is caused by so many having no respect for other peoples property. Recently worked with a fellow
shooter down in Karnes County, TX and he informed me that poaching is running rampant. No
respect for the law either. Probably same people.

I'm always amazed when a shooter next to me acknowledges that my target is a good idea. 2 quick clamps and a piece of cardboard so the bullseye is in the CENTER of the backer. Doesn't matter how shot up the backing is or if I bore sighting at 100 yards, a frame would have to weather rot before I would have to replace. My club uses 4'x4' wood frames. And yes how can the ground be shot up less than 1/2 way to any target.

The benchrest range I belong to, has several bullet holes in the metal roof. And the baffles and their frames are full of holes. I've seen 5 round groups on the steel frames holding up the baffles which are about 8 feet off the ground. It HAS to be intentional.

And this is the benchrest range, mind you. You would think accuracy would be better, but I've seen some guys doing mag dumps while sitting at that range. I just kept driving that day.

Next time you are at an indoor shooting range, when you get to a shooting bay look at the ceiling and the floors. I guarantee it will be riddled with bullet holes.

It's terrifying how irresponsible some can be with firearms, and no place better illuminates this then indoor shooting ranges that predominantly host pistol shooters.
Don't forget to look at the ceiling above and behind the firing line !

We have multiple generations of folks raised with no discipline, never worked so they have no respect for othets property, no goals or asperations to get out of mommys basement, mommy and daddy are still finaving them, the list goes on. No surprise at what your seeing. Too lazy to go hang a target so they shoot at the supports and if chips fly.....hey that's good enough to hit a deer, right. It is part of the disgusting society we have need reduced to. It will only get worse. Raise the rates, that will get rid of some. Stop the daily fee shooting 100 percent. Members only will help some.

Our club is all volunteer. People will leave garbage laying around and shot up targets down range. When asked they say I pay my dues somebody else can clean it up.
As the President of MCSA if someone said that to me, that would be their last day of shooting at our range. We have the same issues as everyone is saying here. Putting in cameras and making sure everyone knows they are there as slowed some of the bullshit down but not all of it.
Jeff, I agree with you on raising the rates. We know it won't stop all of it but I'm pushing for a major rate increase this year to slow down the rise of our membership but I'm also still dealing with some of the "good old boy" mentality so I'm not sure what I'm going to get.

The good old buy mentality is dangerous many times. I saw it shut down a local shoot 20 yrs ago that averaged 150 guns. Good old boys mouthing of about 20.00. Oh, they did not even shoot. Just old long time members living in the past.

At a range, public or private, ever smell beer or other alcohol on someone's breath? It happens.

California legalized recreational marijuana a year or two ago. At the range I go to if they smell it, it's a no-shoot sign. This past weekend had 2 women who, during their wait time (range has limited lanes open during Covid), went out to their car and smoked a *bunch* of weed. The RSO who turned them away apparently was being a racist (interestingly, the two women and the RSO were all black.) Go figure.

I would like to make a list to compare cost of joining a club and dues. We are in Southern California and this is what we offer.

Private range, trap, skeet, 4 pistol ranges, 100-200 yard rifle range. No fee for shooting rifle or pistol, $5 a round trap and skeet. Cost are $750 to join and $200 a year dues. And we have indoor plumbing.

What do you guys have to pay?

I get to shoot at a friends place, only 50 yards, but its great for handguns, free and I can always pee
behind a bush.

One of the ranges that I belong to also has a skeet range. Some expert marksman take the unbroken clay targets left on the ground and hang them by nails on the horizontal framework for the 50 and 100 yd target backers. They are shot to pieces. The 200 and 300 yd are pretty secure because they won’t walk that far. Must be the woodsman in them

Do that at our club and you'll be finding a new place to destroy the backers.

Raising the fees to join and belong may work but may run some off. At WWCCA it is mandatory that you participate on work details through the year. You earn time toward your annual fee. Just as importantly it gives the members an insight into what it costs in time and money to maintain a range.

I am a member at multiple clubs. Fees range from $100 to $200 a year. I would gladly pay more to get rid of some of the less mindful, but it is hard to suggest raising the annual dues when the club might lose some good members that might not be able to afford it. (Think retirees)
I think a healthy initiation fee, say $250 or more might scare away the undesirables.
