300BLK Hog Exterminating Loads?

Tannerite
And some more competent buddies. You wouldn't believe the comedy of errors my crew has performed over the last year. Like the 3 stooges. ARs not completely in battery, SCAR17 on safe, empty chambers, dead thermal batteries, falling asleep, rifles out of pocket while taking a whiz. I swear I hear the hogs laughing at them sometimes. Oh well at least they're being safe and it makes for lots of fun by the fire.

Folks on this forum are A-OK! Time to load some up and see what they’ll do for me View attachment 1208251

Are those electroplated lead slugs? Speer used to call its' electroplated line "Gold Dot" in their handgun bullets. Curious if you could cut one open across the length. If they are and I were gonna use those on hogs, I'd gut shoot them. That armored shoulder will splatter lead boolits. G'luck, keep us posted on your results.

Anecdotal accounts state that a boar’s shield is dense enough to stop both bullets and arrows; however, this reported ability of these structures has not been either tested or confirmed scientifically.

The 150 gold dot will get it done far more efficiently than the Barnes bullet. The 125 SST is a better choice for hunting than the Barnes. I don't have Hogs but have 4 300 BLKs that I have tested extensively. Mostly on whitetail deer and groundhogs . The Barnes is a Military/ FBI designed bullet that will kill , however there are bullets that carry far more energy as mentioned in previous posts.

I disagree with that in the Blackout. Those are for close quarter self defense. Intended to fragment on impact. I've tried lots of hog killing bullets mentioned earlier including the Speer 130 semi-flatnose and the old Berger 135. Feral hogs aren't like whitetail or groundhogs. Energy splattered doesn't matter. Unless you just want a slow painful death. Try them on feral hogs and get back with me. The Barnes will not fragment and will leave a permanent wound channel throughout the entire animal. Usually exiting to further allow rapid blood loss. Not just wasted energy, by design.

You need to go to that thread that i linked to. The Speer 150 GD 300BO bullet has been tested and retested for a couple of years. It IS a killer. It expands at lower velocities. I would not shoot that bullet in a 308, but it would flawlessly at the 300 BO velocities.

My oldest son and his buddy came in for the weekend from college and were wanting to do a little hog hunting. We killed 2 boars, both in the 200 lb class. The first one was shot a through the front shoulder, breaking tons of bone before making a complete pass through......again, no bullet recovery. The second was a spinal shot that dropped him instantly......no bullet recovery. I've hunted with the 125 grain SST, 125 grain Nos Ballistic tip, 110 grain Nosler Varmageddon, 125 grain Speer TNT, and even the 150 grain Nosler Partition. The 150 grain Gold Dot has surpassed them all as far as I'm concerned. This is a dang good hunting bullet and the price is hard to beat!

Last time I talked to hogcaller they had closer to 50 hogs down with this bullet.

It’s jacketed and bonded in such a way as to not separate from the core.

No doubt it's a hog killer. I've killed them with my 22 magnum. What is that electroplated lead slug gonna do at a broadside 200 yard shot in the BLK?

I'll look for a box since I have 7 Blackouts to feed anyway. I can always ring steel with them if hogs start running off and playing "hide from the buzzards".

Pass through a 300 pounder.

Impressive if at 200, not so if at 20 yds. I was curious on what my groundhogs would look like after a Barnes 110 TAC-TX.
Last night my groundhog alarm went off and hit this "one" at 80 yds. It sucked out the insides, he went nowhere.

I’m going to run the 150 GD at about 1,865 and see what happens. My set-up isn’t ideal for chasing max loads. I had it at 1,920 but want to make sure I’m safe and feeding properly. Thermal zeroed, counting down the days.

I hunt hogs with intention of harvesting the meat so I am a little more selective with my shot placement (no brains in my meat and no ruptured organs). I am also lazy in that carrying my gear is the most work I want to do so my goal is to drop the hog and not have to track it or drag it through the thick brush.

There are lots of bullets out there that will kill a pig, and each has its trade-off. I think that under 150 yards the Barnes Tac-TX 110gr delivers more lethal effect with its dumping of terminal energy. I think that distances beyond 150 yards the 150 gr Gold Dot wins. The downside to the Barnes is the massive hydrostatic shock, which can destroy meat so my preferred shot placement is an ear hole if I have time. The downside to the Gold Dot is passing right throughs at closer distances. As far as TNT's they are an accurate bullet that makes for a fantastic plinking/bulk ammo round. However, it just isn't as effective as TAC-TX or Gold Dot.

How fast do you push the two bullets?

When you look at the numbers for terminal energy dumps, it becomes impossible to compare on paper, but it’s worth a look.

The Barnes 110 with a muzzle velocity of 2100 hits at 100 yards with 825 pounds and dumps it all if it does not exit.

The 150 Gold Dot with a muzzle velocity of 1900 hits with 960 and will have dumped the same amount of energy or more, if it exits at any thing less than 650 fps.

It’s kind of nice for the cartridge to be arguing over which bullet is better, instead of which bullet might work.

The guy that i do some work for that has a REAL hog problem used a 220 swift. After he got shucked off a horse and broke his arm he went to a 300blk or a 22 hornet. The swift is the killing machine. He says that speed kills.
