What the best VIHTAVUORI powder for 300 Win Mag and 338 Lapus?

I realize I might have to buy more then one burn rate.

300 Win Mag - 26”, 190 to 220gr
338 Lapua - 250gr and 300 gr 26” barrel

Certainly N570 will give the best muzzle velocities at reasonable pressures (give it a run around the block with P-Max, it's free to use). Though remember that N570 is a double base high energy powder and so will burn significantly hotter than the single based N100 alternatives - and so significantly reduce your barrel life. In that regard, You may find that N170 is not far behind on muzzle velocity and will not be so hard on your barrels.

N570 works very well in the large Lapua cases because it takes a large charge of N570 to get the bullets moving. If you have enough case capacity, that powder will give amazing speeds.

It will ‘work’ in a 300 win mag with heavy bullets but may not get you the best speeds due to the fact that you don’t have enough case capacity to fit enough N570 in there. Tried it in a 30-28 Nosler with 215gr Berger bullets and it works well, but can’t reach great speeds because it maxes out on case capacity. And the 30-28 Nosler has more capacity than a 300 Win Mag. In a 300 Norma Improved, N570 is an excellent choice because you can fit the big 92+ grain charges required to achieve fast speeds.

Well this is helpful. I personally don’t chase high velocity because of the reasons stated above...just so I can hit my target within the guns capabilities I don’t care how hard it hits:) I use to use high test loads in 308 W w/17t’s and then backed down to 2620 FPS and all is well...

Well in that case, it makes no sense to shoot a big 300 win mag or Lapua since they are built for burning a lot of powder to achieve higher speeds. Might as well save money on powder and shoot smaller rounds if you don’t care about speed.

I can load my 300 Norma Mag Improved down and run it at 300 win mag speeds very easily, but then that would completely defeat the purpose of having the large Norma Mag case.

Baer,

With the two lighter bullets you list, I use N-165, and it will even work with the heavier 300 WM bullet. Otherwise, Geoffrey has good recommendations.

I thought of that but does not make sense unless you are squezing ever last drop of BULLET vilpcoty/..a 338 Lapua backed off 2% is still going further then a 300 Win Mag backed off 2%...and hit harder

If you can find RL26, that would be a really good choice in the 300 win mag with heavier bullets.
RL33 is a good choice for the 338 Lapua. Lots of people have really good luck with it

Seen some IMR powders around lately. IMR7977 is pretty much the same burn rate as H1000 and is worth a try. IMR8133 is around the burn rate of N570 and would work very well in the 338 Lapua

Baer,

Again, depends upon the barrel length and bullet. For 69s, 16" is N-133, for 20" is N-135, for 24" is N-140. For .308 short barrels, N-140. Long barrels N-550. I haven't tested N-555 in anything.
