20BRA with Berger 55gr Bullets

I just built a 20BRA to shoot the Berger 55gr bullets. My barrel is a Bartlein gain twist 8.5-8. Im just trying to flatten my curve a bit and save some barrel life by asking for some load suggestions.

I want to try to use powders that will be less temp sensitive and consistent lot to lot. Im thinking AR Comp and or H4895, VV150, VV160, maybe RL 16 and or H4350.

AR Comp thinking about starting at 26gr working up. Think this may be too fast?

VV150 27gr and working up.

VV160 29gr and up

H4350 29gr and up.

Would like to see 3600fps with excellent accuracy.

H4350 is probably one of the most temp stable powders on the market. If H4350 is a powder that will get the performance you're looking for, with regard to temp stability, it would be one of the best. I've used a far amount of RL16 in a couple different rifles now and it's pretty good with regard to temp stability but not as good as H4350.

When I was working with my 20Dasher and the 55Berger VV170 gave excellent accuracy, however VV powders are very temp sensitive. So as I can I have been switching to Hodgdons extreme series of powder. Was looking for H4350 for it a couple years back to try in this rifle. As of late I’ve been building M4s and having fun plinking and sharing the fun of shooting with others.Sounds like your 20BRA would be a very nice cartridge for distant pd’s or ‘chucks and coyotes.Would love to see pictures of the case and rifle. Please keep us up to speed on this project.

Viht n170? Is that a typo?

No it’s not a typo,I tend to shoot very slow powders in my small calibers and XPs.Its kind of a strange phenomenon, but it works.I still have an 8lb jug I bought at the now defunct Varmint Hunters Jamboree.Have not checked if it’s still available any longer.

I never could get any speed out of mine with RL16 or H4350. RL15 shoots crazy accurate.
One of these days when I get some time I wanna try H4895.

what velocity and barrel length? I’m assuming it was a full case?

I have both H4895 and AR Comp on hand. AR Comp has acted very much like H4895 in my 6 BRA. 26.8 grains looks to be near a max safe load in a 20 BR while fireforming in my set up, my lot of powder. Not sure if I would be able to increase the load by another 1 to 1.5 grains in the improved case?
