HELP! (700 tear down)

Five years late. . . the easiest answer is to kerf the recoil lug just down to the threads, file the kerf wider until almost through to the barrel shoulder and receiver, tap the now-split lug out of the bite, and unthread the now loose barrel by hand.

No torque or vise required, just costs a $5 recoil lug.

Where can i get $5 recoil lugs?

So.....i am taking apart my first action, a Remington 700. Its a standard short action with their factory thin barrel on it. Totally stock. I am using a 4 bolt barrel vice and an inside that action, action wrench with a "T" handle on it and this dam thing wont move?????? Im not a small guy and im afraid of twisting or messing up the barrel if i crank on it any harder. Standard left hand thread so im going in the right direction, i have even tried applying some heat (500 degrees+/-) with a heat gun. Nothing :(. So......what dumb ass little thing am i missing and doing wrong? Any help or expertise would be awesome. Thanks guys.

Happy shooting.
The tenon threads on a Rem 700 are RIGHT HAND THREADS!!!!

That should only take about a day...removing a recoil lug with a file

Use my Ultimate barrel vise and you can seperate
any 700 from the barrel w/o damage to any parts.
No heat/shims/rossin/leather or any other gimmicks or tricks.
My vise does the job. LDS

Yeah but sounded like he needed an ultimate receiver vise/wrench

It's about 20 minutes of file work after kerfing with a hacksaw, less than an hour start to finish. If you're replacing with an aftermarket lug, the loss is small.

If you already have vises and wrenches there's no point, but if you're Remag'ing your first R700 action, it's far easier than building/buying tooling.

so you just cut the lug as flush as you can get it with barrel/action with a hacksaw and then file it the rest of the way out?

internal wrenches should not be used at high torques, especially in the wrong direction.

No, you use a hacksaw to remove as much of the lug material between the receiver and barrel shoulder as possible (in one spot), then file the rest 'till the remaining material (against the receiver, threads, and shoulder) is paper thin. Pick out the paper thin shards, and use a prick punch to knock the now-split lug out of the gap.

To be clear, this is a total waste if you already have a competent barrel wrench. I don't.

Why destroy parts. take excessive time on procedures that may or may not work, when you can use the UBV a Holland or any action wrench that fits against the back of the barrel. There is no way possible to hurt any part when using this combo. I have disassembled hundreds of NEW barrel actions, and my vise has never been defeated, nor have I ever had a part that wasn't as NEW.
My vise is mounted on a 90 deg tube that fits the draw bar of my truck. The wrench as described above, a 3/4" rachet, and a 4' cheater bar. It takes minutes for the setup and only SECONDS to
do the job. Why make a job difficult when its not???? LDS
