1988 270 Win Remington M700

I have a 32 year old Rem 700. I think it's time to rebarrel. What caliber?. Budget build for my 15 year old son.

6MM Rem AI or 257 Roberts AI come to mind if you load. If you're using factory ammo the .270,.280, and 30-06 probably have the best selection to choose from.

So you are tearing off a good barrel to make something for your son. Right?

For the money involved buy the boy a new rifle. Some are less money than the new barrel and gunsmithing involved to re-barrel that Remington. If you want less recoil, something like a 270 with lower power loads until he grows into it or a brake would help.

One of the dumbest things I ever did was get rid of my Rem 700 270 Win. I was young and dumb in those days chasing calibers for the "perfect" hunting cartridge. It took me some time to realize that most cartridges will work just fine if the man behind the rifle is a skilled marksman. Leaning how to become a proficient field shooter for me was far more effective than anguishing over which cartridge to select.

So my recommendation is the 270 Win. It's relatively light recoil and flat shooting capabilities make it an ideal big game hunting rifle for most North American game. It's also hard to go wrong with the 30 06 which is a bit more versatile.

What model? The old BDL versions had decent fit and finish. The others, not so much. I'd rebarrel it because your sunk costs are already spent, so you only need to consider the incremental parts and labor for the rebarrel job. In a long action, I like 25-06 if your son doesn't reload and 6mm-06 if he does. Use a suitable twist for the high BC bullets now available in those respective calibers.

270 gets it done. Why rebarrel? I have a couple of 270's older than that and they still shoot. I use em at huntin season so they don't get many rounds through them.. How do you know the barrel is bad? If it is at all?

What makes you think it needs a new barrel? I have a 1967 R700 Varmint Special in 6mm Rem wearing the OEM barrel. Here's a few early 4-shot load development groups, just looking for a node (only vertical spread notated). Bullet was Berger 74-gr MEF, but I stopped and switched to Speer 70-gr TNT after this session.

If it shoots Id leave it alone. Even at 32 years old few people shoot enough rounds to wear out a 270 win barrel. If I didn't go back to 270 Win., Id look at 284 Win.

Both the 284 and the 280 Rem are very impressive cartridges. My load in a standard 280 is a 160g at 2930 with IMR 7828, load right out of the Nosler Manual #4...bolt gun load.

40 Deep, With your current rifle, bed it, freefloat the barrel, tune the trigger, then shoot it after a good cleaning. Then determine if you need a new barrel.

To be fair, my '67 700 VS is not box stock, it has been bedded/floated and the Rem trigger tuned, but the action and barrel are original.

FWIW 1967 was the very first year for the BDL Varmint Special, which through 1994 sported always a 24-in heavy barrel, walnut stock, available in 8 chamberings, the largest being 308 Win and 7mm-08 Win. I stumbled onto mine in a local pawn shop, in virtual mint condition, wearing an old Redfield 4-12 scope.

I would not rule out a Long Action .308 Winchester . I have done a few ,they allow me to seat the bullets anywhere I want with no mag restrictions . Recoil is not bad with a .308 ,maybe start Him on mellow loads and work up as he grows . If you reload .257 Roberts on a long action works well and recoil is not much of a factor . Good luck with whatever you choose, pretty cool thing you are doing for him .

I must have missed the recoil stipulation. At 15 the lad could already be "big enough to eat hay" as my dad would say.
