Can someone give me the short version of forming 6ppc

I am contemplating a 6ppc.
As best I can tell, the only factory brass is Norma. It also appears that many don't like the Norma because it is too soft.
I understand that no one wants to make 6ppc brass because of the plethora of neck sizes it has been chambered to over the years.

My question is: How much work is involved in taking 220R Lapua brass to 6ppc?

Thanks in advance.

There is nothing out there that surpasses the potential accuracy of the PPC. However, achieving that is not a short or quick undertaking. It can be very rewarding but be prepared for a lot of work. Not meaning to discourage you but my opinion from many rounds downrange. Before I catch a lot of flack from the long range guys, I am talking about SR benchrest.

Thanks guys. It would appear that I am too lazy at this point in my life to shoot PPC !
Come on retirement !

+1 on DJ as you will have exactly what you want/need and probably one of the best people to work with and best outcomes , but don’t let him know that I told you that !!!!

When you consider the cost of powder, primers, bullets, barrel wear and transportation to and from the range, DJ's ready to compete brass is a no brainer.

The 6 PPC at the accuracy node runs some serious pressure. I have made cases from 7.62x39 in Remingon, Winchester, IMI, Federal, and PMC. PMC brass is the only brass that would take the pressure, and I made around 10K, at least from PMC over the years in 22 and 6 PPC.

Steps I took were as follows, Winter time project:

1. Neck down to 7mm, set headspace with gauge

2. trim brass to length

3. Neck turn to .0135 neck thickness while at 7mm

4. neck down to 6mm

5. Final "clean up" neck turn at 6mm

6. final full length size and set exact headspace for your chamber

Tell about your experience with Large vs. Small primers. Should be interesting to a lot of people.

I wouldn't give up on PPC because of the brass options. Either have someone like DJ's make it with Lapua or just buy the Norma (if still available). A few hundred pieces will last as long as your barrel (or several times as long as many match shooters keep their barrels), as they'll go 30+ firings unless shooting red hot loads.

There is about .035 differences in group sized between large and small primers, as told to me by Pendel. I have shot the PMC formed brass in a number of benchrest rifles in 22 and 6 ppc, and the accuracy is astounding to say the least.

When you neck down the 7.62x39, a real long neck forms. It would be interesting to form Grendel brass from the PMC 7.62x39 brass IF you can find any.

I think that the Lapua 7.62x39 brass comes from Canada. I had some and sold it a while back.

Back when we had a brass shortage back in the 90’s rcbs or redding made us case forming/trim dies for 7.62x39 brass. We were using any kind of russian BS brass we could get. Weight sorting and water weight sorting a few thousand would get you 20-30 to go to a match with. It was pretty tuff to even find brass cases period. I bought a big wooden box of surplus from some shithole country and borrowed an ak. I shot rounds into a dirt bank so long i dont ever want to see another 7.62x39 AK rifle.

I own my fathers 6ppc rifle. It was built by Fred Sinclair and shoots .08 moa groups with a new barrel.

The way my explains the reloading process; things were much simpler 30 years ago.

* Weight sort virgin 220 brass to your liking
* Neck turn
* Fill a case half way up the neck with 8208 or some other fast-ish burning powder.
* Smash a ~68 grain bullet of your choice in the case
* Fire away

Done.
