PRS OPTICS - Illuminated reticle or not?

Is illumination needed, or desired, in a PRS rifle optic?

Looking at the Precision Rifle Blog "What the Pros Use" (Dec 2018), it appears that most were illuminated.

Will a non-illuminated optic be at a disadvantage?

Many higher end scopes just come with illumination. I have never used mine at a match. Nightforce ATACR, Vortex Razor are a couple of the popular scopes. Don't go cheap on glass as it will not hold up to hard use. You need to be into the 1800$ up glass. Preferably 34mm. Reticle is important and you will want a tree style. You will also probably want mils but some still use moa.

Again. Find a match and go observe or offer to help..There will be many, many scopes there and most guys will help you in your decisions.

Thank you Jeff.

Just trying to decide if it's worth it to save a few buck.

I'll be overseas for the immediate future so I can can save. Patience is something I have to work hard at, though. Even if I can't touch it or look through it, I want it at home waiting for me.

I would have it.

a few weeks ago I shot a match and one of the targets was in a cut in the trees at 8XX yards.

Am illuminated reticle would have been a benefit on that particular stage.

I rarely use illumination in a match, but I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Nope & Nope.
I haven't even put the provided battery in any of my scopes to see if the illumination works or not. You simply do not need it. I have never once used it in a match. If you shot a night match, you would, but there have only been a few of those. Most high-end scope come with illumination, some don't or charge extra.

Isn't there a $2000.00 Optic limit on PRS Optics for matches ?

Thanks for that info. Kinda looking into PRS as I've never shot in one. Looks like great fun
It can be fun. It's still "run what ya brung" for the most part. The "Production Class" and others really never caught on so don't bother trying to stay within a class. Local PRS/NRL type matches usually don't care, they just want you to show up and have fun. Most everyone will help you or loan you whatever you need to compete for the day.
