New Lapua 6.5x47L brass issues.

PopCharlie

I started with nothing. I still have some left.

I purchased 4 boxes of 6.5x47 Lapua brass about 4 years ago for a new rifle. I opened the last new blue box and started checking it a week ago. I ran them thru my normal "new brass" process:
F/L size non bushing die, no decapper
Run the over a .2625 mandrel
Checked concentricity- really bad .003 to .010 ugh
Checked neck wall thickness- variations were .001 to .003 ugh
Next I squared up the primer pockets. This is were I noticed the really bad problem.....the pockets were really loose.
I checked them with a gauge to confirm. I tried seating a few primers. They will hold a primer, but i can tap them on the bench and they fall out. So this brass is unusable.
I ordered another new box and checked these. They have the normal Lapua quality and consistency.
Just a bad batch I guess. All in all I got useable 40 pieces out of the 100.
Has anybody else seen Lapua brass this bad?

Even the best can have a bad batch every now and then. Tommy Mc

That's my thinking as well. Especially since the next batch was very good. Just goes to show that we cannot take anything for granted in this sport.

I had a batch thats about4-6 years old. Necks were varied 3-5 thousanths out. Turning produced some holstein like patterns of light nd dark. Real issue was tight pockets. Almost had to drop back to old Lee Classic Hand tool and use a 4# hammer to prime. Defaced primers when seating.
Found some relief with Federal 205M AR primers that are a sniff smaller than others.
I do have a blue box of 308W that are good for 2 firings before primers fall out. Its all man made stuff.

This is why I went to Peterson for my 6.5x47 brass.
I have 50 pcs of Peterson. It is good brass. Ive fired it 3 times. I'd buy it again. I just could not pass up the sale price of the Lapua brass at BulletCentral.

Did you send Lapua that picture and ask? I'd be curious what they'd say. I've never seen a piece of new brass look like that. If I were to guess, it didn't get polished after one of earlier anneal and form steps and went the rest of the way through the process - cause it has the final neck anneal step performed.

No I haven’t contacted Lapua. I have bought about 1400 Lapua cases in various calibers over the years and to have 1 exception is not bad. I also have to say i have always had at least 100 but i think twice i have had 101. Seems there qc is tilted to make sure no shortages but if they are going to error it is to the long side.

so i guess i might send pictures and see what they say. I’ll let everybody know what i find out

Every box of Lapua that I've bought has had 101 pieces, which I really appreciate. I've used the extra case many times when something unfortunate befell one of the other cases.

I'm curious what they think happened, not curious in if they'll "make it right" or give you something.

Well l have contacted Lapua. They actually called me back.

Their first reaction was that it was from the foam but when i said this was the only one in the box he said that isn’t it. Then he said we have never seen this before. He offered to send me a piece of brass to replace it but I declined. Then he said what about a cap. I said yes and i Would wear it proudly.

And he did say he would forward my pictures to Nammo for completeness. I must say i am impressed with Lapua customer service

so thanks for pushing me to teport the issue. It pays off sometimes

That's cool! A cap is a nice gesture. Definitely wear that with pride!

I had a box of Lapua 223 brass that I bought through Brownells. That box had 50 or so casses which had annealing signs all the way to the base and in wierd patterns. I call Brownells and they sent a new box no questions ask and no return of the defective brass.
