WTB a lathe

The potential problem I see with used, especially if it’s not powered, is are you ending up with a “project”. I wanted American iron but didn’t find any at the time and I didn’t want the risk of a “project”.
yeah for my first lathe when i didnt know anything about them I bought a south bend 13". I found out it was a project and its still in pieces. I eventually bought a PM and wish i would have done that to start with.

This one just popped up. Long way for you but there’s probably a member that could help down there. A little lighter duty than a commercial 13-14 inch lathe.
I saw that. I started out on a machine that size. You can do good work on it and learn problem solving skills at the same time. In two days we could be there and have it loaded so that's not all that bad. More lathes in Florida than in GA,SC and NC combined. This guy operates at the tip of the spear so he's into big and shiny things. He has an image to maintain. Really good guy, just have to keep him in his place. ;)

Might have a 81 SB Heavy 10 D-4 camlock for sale with 48 inc bed taper attachment 3 chucks backing plate several dead & live centers quick change tool post with 4 or 5 tool holders only thing messing is the steady Rest ! 110 v purchased it and never hooked it up it still has the original paint looks like new, bed is flame harden and is in good shape it was in a Votech school and know its history, hasn't been turned on since I purchased it 4 years ago or really used in 10 years ! It has the dual tumbler thread box ! I'm just having a hard time letting it go but it needs to be in the hands of someone that will put it to use ! North central Arkansas!

$4900 without any substantial tooling (4 jaw and thats it?). maybe its in good shape, maybe its not... just over 1.5 spindle but unless you knew that harrison 13x27 was "the one" for you for some reason - why would i think this is a "deal" in anyway over a new PM at the same price point?

i constantly see used (and often abused) lathes sell for prices that make me think a new PM ultra precision that you can get accessories, warranty, and support is a pretty good deal.

Thanks I'll pass it along.

Sorry for the intrusion but this group is the best resource around. I have a good friend who is retiring from the SOF community in a year or so and needs a lathe. I had a 14X40 Nardini lined up for him but that deal went sideways while he was deployed this last trip. Looking for a 14" lathe or smaller. We're in eastern NC. Anything within a two day drive is in play.
PM me details
Thanks for the help.

Dave
There is a grizzly gun Smith lathe in winston- Salem it's listed on here in the tool section. It has tooling with it.

I know people do good work on a heavy 10, but the few I've run seem kinda light and more like a toy.

I've never quite understood the "rigidity" argument when it comes to barrel work.
I'm distinguishing between "tightness"- which is critical- and "rigidity", which is trying to rip 100 thou off in a single pass of 4140.

Barrel work for me has never involved needing to take large cuts. In fact, the way most of us work-hold barrels is in a spiders, meaning you MUST make light cuts lest you shove the barrel back into the headstock.

Fact is, indicators do not lie.

I can hold the same one-thousandth tolerances (thanks to DRO's on both axes) on the first lathe I started with, a SB 9a- and on my Sheldon which is more than twice it's mass and power. For other work I do, the mass/rigidity of the Sheldon is a plus. For turning teeny tiny 1" hollow steel tubes, I've never seen a difference.

To each their own, this is just my own experience.

I didn't allude to chambering. I wouldn't spend the money for a DRO on a H10 either. If I didn't have a 10ee or my Clausing 6913, I would have no trouble with a 4003G Grizzly or a Rockwell among a couple others if I needed an inexpensive lathe to do my lathe work.
