Circle Flies

Although my birthday was a few days ago, my wife and I just went out today for my birthday meal of Filet and Shrimp at Longhorn's in Easley, SC.

We were enjoying our delicious meal when a customer nearby asked the server to get the manager. When the manager arrived the woman loudly complained about how her asparagus was prepared, wasn't fit to eat, and that her sister was a professional chef and she knew this was not properly prepared. She went on and on about not getting enough refills and finally ended with complaining about not being able to eat her meal because of all the gnats swarming around her face.

The Lady manager kept her cool, calmed things down, and walked away. I thought it was someone looking for a free meal or a huge discount.

When our server brought our check, I asked whether the disgruntled customer got her free meal. She said, "Oh, no. This manager doesn't play that game!"

Since they left no tip, we tipped a little extra. But, that wasn't enough. This brought to mind a joke about the fellow getting stopped by a State Trooper for speeding. The entire time the Trooper was writing the ticket, flies kept circling his face as he swatted at them. Finally, the speeder said those were "circle flies" after you. Trooper says, "What are circle flies?" Speeder says, "They circle around a horse's a** in the pasture." Trooper asks, "Are you calling me a horse's a**?"

Speeder says,"No Sir!!!! But it's hard to fool them circle flies!!!"

On our way out, I asked for the manager and thanked her for a wonderful meal and service. I mentioned sitting near the rude customer and told her the circle fly story. She got a good belly laugh and said, "So, those were circle flies that lady was swatting? I can't wait to tell this story to my crew!" LOL

Didn't cost a penny to thank her and leave her laughing. I know I felt better.

Two sides to every story....and nothing worse than getting your hard earned money stolen by sub-par restaurants . Maybe that manager sucks at their job and is just a prick ? Yes, I speak from actual experience of how that whole restaurant biz works.

Yeah, I've had it go both ways in restaurants, but 98% of the time they are fantastic and want you to come back. I hate people that always expect something for nothing. I just don't go back to the 2%.
We sold land to a hotel chain years ago and when it was done they invited us to the restaurant for dinner. The question was asked about people complaining so they don't have to pay for a room, which apparently happens a lot on the hotel business. The owner said they have a reporting system that tells who these folks are and after doing it two or three times they wont give them a reservation. I don't blame them.

Other side of the coin.
We use to go to this one restaurant near our home. They had great service and a great sirloin steak. Then management changed and we had a series of them not cooking the meat enough or burning it.
One time this happened and I told the waitress that my wife's steak was over cooked and mine was bloody. She had the manager come out to talk with us. He asked if we wanted another steak. By this time we had eaten most of it and declined the offer. We indicated to him that this was not the first time and seem to be a pattern. He indicated that he didn't want to bring this up to his chef as he was a nice guy and he didn't want to offend him. o_O
We just looked at each other in total awe. We couldn't believe he just told us that we shouldn't complain and he had no plan to do anything about it as he was a snow flake. Obviously, he had no business being a restaurant manager and even if he had felt that way telling us just seem ludicrous. We went back once more hoping that they had worked out their issues. No chance, had similar problem again with the food.
We haven't been back since.

It was clear to me that the "lady" was pushing for a free meal because she giggled like a school girl after the manager was out of ear shot. Her friend actually seemed embarrassed by the whole thing. If I have a problem with a meal, I will quietly notify the staff, ask for nothing, and hope for better in the future. If it happens again, I simply do not return. Anyone makes mistakes but it's how you handle it that sticks with me.

I do vote with my wallet. My wife tells me that soon I will run out of places to shop since I do NOT support any anti-gun business or anti-Trump business.

You can fool me....but it's hard to fool them circle flies. :):)

Went to a place herein town. What I ordered was not what was brought out and it was just lukewarm. Complained to the manager and he just said "Thats Nice!!" and walked away. I haven't been back and that was three years ago.

In the 90s wife and i took kids to Saturday night dinner. Large place and pretty nice. Service was slow. I caught the manager waiting tables. What is wrong? 2 waiters quit, one didnt show says he. Ok, i just need to feed my kids before they eat your other customers. I understand your problem, we can go elsewhere no animosity. Wait please sir and we will take care of you. The staff went double time and made it all work for the whole place.
I left a generous tip on the table. Time to pay, the manager thanked me for understanding, no charge for dinner.

:eek:Probably 30 years ago a guy I worked with were out of town at our company education center. We went out to dinner at a nice restaurant and I ordered blackened fish. Shortly after they brought our meals out I noticed some moving in my wild rice. Liking closer is was a baby cockroach!
Al
Said watch this I will clear this place. No don’t. Held it down with fork until we could get the waiter. Very apologetic and said the manager would soon be over. He apologized over and over and had another dinner served and said dinner and drinks were on him the rest of the night. Shouldn’t tell two 30 year olds that. :D

Working plenty hours to feed those same 4 kids. Came home one cold day to a pot of chicken rice soup by the front door. Wife n kids out,, i cleaned up, heated a big bowl, turned on the tv, ate and put my feet up. Half hour later i got up to get some more. Love that wild brown rice. Wait a second...funny lookin brown rice, it gots legs!
Hey big sister down the street, thanks for the chicken soup, yeah! Ummm
About the soup, you are stuffed? Yeah i ate some... delicious. Hey, look a little closer as some of the rice has legs, no not foolin. Hello? Hello? Hello???

BTW, we call them Joo-Joo flies.

About the free meals: We have a certain group of folks in our area that are known for creating a lot of confusion with the staff at restaurants then acting upset and trying to get a free meal or meals, usually several of them. It's quite a show if you are near them and know what is going on. Fortunately, most of the restaurant managements are aware of the scam and don't buy it.

Slightly different side of the free meal scams, but a friend was the manager at a large chain buffet restaurants. Two guys looked a little shady so he was keeping an eye on them. One got up and left, telling the cashier that his friend would be paying. When the friend got up the manager was close behind. The guy bolted out the door and the manager took up the chase. The deadbeat ran full speed across the parking lot and didn't slow down for the busy street he was approaching; he ran out into traffic and he got slammed by a pickup truck. DRT. When the cops arrived the manager explained that the runner obviously felt so bad about running out on the check that he committed suicide. The cop looked at my friend askance but wrote it up just like he heard it.

One thing you never want to do in a restaurant is send a meal back to the kitchen. You have no idea what the cook might do to your food. Good Chefs are high strung. They get mad when someone is not satisfied with what they prepare. I spent a lot of time in the kitchens of some very high class places. Take my advice. Don't do it.

Nick, I always suspected but never heard it first hand. That is why I ask for nothing but expect better next time. Thanks for the good advice.
