Polishing off melonite

Is it possible to take a melonite finished bolt and polish off the black?

If so can you tell me how to go about it?

Melonite isn’t a coating. It’s a chemical reaction on the surface of the metal. I’m sure you can grind the surface down but you are almost certainly going to make a mess of the bolt. Remove the surface and you’ve now reduced the diameter. I seriously doubt you can hold the grind to just the depth of the Nitride penetration. Super hard surface with softer underneath is gonna be a nightmare. Buy another bolt !

I would advise against attempting to remove Melonite. As already mentioned it is not a coating (like ceracoat) but instead a chemical reaction.
Melonite can still rust from sweat. I have to regularly clean my M&P Shield during the warmer months to keep it at bay. I have seen attempts to remove Melonite (attempting to) cause corrosion to form very quickly and more often.

It can be polished off to make it white. That happens from normal wear and tear. Standard buffing tools will work.

You can buff the black off to make it look silver with a buffing wheel. I use a little more aggressive compound to speed up the process. Your not removing any measurable amount of material. The hardened case is under the black anyhow and will remain un changed.
