OAL cartridge help

Making my own cartridge for the Hornady OAL gauge. Got the recommended drill bit and bit. Chucked up ama once fired 6.5 creedmoore and it worked perfect. Next to 223.

Laupa trimmed and sized brass, drilled fine. But when I try to thread it, it slips in the chuck and deforms the brass. Next try, I cranked it down enough to hold, and dang if the jaw pressure didn't deform the brass. Tried and ruined 4 pieces of premium brass..... any ideas??

Thanks

no problem chucking the brass in the three jaw chuck here. do you have the correct tap? Perhaps you are trying to cut oversized threads, or perhaps you have drilled too small for the tap.

I did have your problem when trying to tap LC brass in .50BMG. That brass is very hard and not easy to tap or drill. I bored the base and fitted an Aluminum plug that was tapped correctly, and then pressed it in place with red Loctite. Finally I turned the face of the threaded plug exactly flush with the cartridge base.

Yup, correct tap, worked flawless on my 6.5. thought about the drill bit being small, but is what I read on here was needed. ‍♂️
