I ran out

Of ammo shooting pdogs today, never had that happen. Shot an even 450 rounds from 650 am to 215 pm when I ran out. My fault as I normally pack 600 rounds in my bag. My McGowan 14 tw, ss 24" barrel has 14365 rounds through it as of today and it just keeps on going. I shoot nothing but moly coated bullets through it just for pdogs, coated in my tumbler. Yup it still prints sub moa at 100 yds.

Lots of doubles on the pups.

Sad. Give me a call next time. BR-549
Have right at 3000 rounds loaded for a trip I didn't get to take. Really enjoy seeing reports of guys getting into them.

Hey 5spd
Isn't that the field where the landowner jokingly offers you $10,000 if you shoot the very last prairie dog. we tried really hard to shoot him last year. I guess we must have missed more than a few. we were hoping to get down there to say hi to you this year, but our fields were so loaded and there was so much shooting to be done. I took 4765 rounds for ten rifles, all 20 cal. I shot 3170 rounds, you remember Mario? he shot 617 of mine, leaving 978. I was getting low on ammo as well, but after 6 days of shooting, I was done anyway. many doubles, at least 6 triples and 1 quad. pups everywhere. BTW Marty says you need a 20 cal. LOL. Jim

Two misses. That's it?????

This is maybe the third hunt you spoke of the past week or so. Seem like 360 or so kills first. Then something in the mid-200's followed by this. That's nearly a 1,000 dogs taken in maybe a week.

Seriously. You have eclipsed in a week what most would dream of doing in a lifetime. Now your ammo bill and reloading time must leave you not time for work or a personal life. Holy whatever - you are living a dedicated shooters' life.

Yes. Caught that barrel having near 15,000 rds. through it. Seriously??? McGowan barrels are made near you but they have built a reputation of being junk in the benchrest community. I had but one and that was more than enough of their crap. Now you tell us 15,000 rounds or close to that. Post a borescope picture of the throat. it probably goes right to the muzzle now.

Turned up cases are split, otherwise I don't keep count like others do. I'd be a superman shooter if I only missed 2! I keep a log book for every round in every gun I own, shoot. I'll take throat picture. Yes it has "firecracks" and some erosion, but its still going strong. These are from midway USA, they clearance out and got 3 of them on sale a while back on a whim. I heard about McGowan being bad long time back, but this one isn't.

Chuck, different ranch than the one we got you set up on. Yes he knows he will never have to pay that bonus for the last rat, they have spread more across the road. Seems like double the amount this year. Stay well

We always throw a few cases of .17 HMR in the truck on the big shoots - just to be sure that no one runs out of something to shoot.

Incredible. I have and use the Lyman also. Works great. The Teslong seems to be quite small in area it pictures.

That barrel is unreal good. I would expect that much wear for a 223 in maybe 4,000 rds. To go near 4 times more is unimaginable. I see and I believe. You have the Superman of barrels.

That is amazing. My 20 cals look worse than that by 3000 rounds. Heat might be my problem. o_O 5spds water jackets must really work!

How are you cooling your barrel?
I made a cotton barrel wrap from old tee shirts, double them up sew in a tube shape slide over and wet down, run a split the length of the forearm, Velcro strap at chamber to keep in place, make it a bit loose to suck heat off the barrel.
I feel my moly coating is a big factor along with keeping the wrap wet

Sounds good, and I'm sure that it is very effective in the breezy, low humidity western US. Could you post a pic of the rifle with the wet sleeve on it sometime? Thanks, Joe

Take a look the post "stopped at 4" and you can see the wrap on the rifle.
