Shilen BR trigger issue

I'm not a terribly big fan of them, but a rem 700 I recently acquired has a Shilen BR trigger on it and I'm having issues with the secondary lever resetting. The top lever does reset, but the firing pin follows the bolt. Seems the secondary lever gets caught on the back of the trigger.

I've tried allowing more over travel, raising the pull weight, adjusting sear engagement, gave it a total clean and blow out, still have the issue. Gun is a J-lock and I have a new FP assembly on the way and will try it out, but I'm not expecting any miracles from it.

Any advice?

I will eventually buy a jewel, but the other half just wouldn't understand if I bought her a new trigger for her birthday this weekend, lol.

Well, still haven't heard back from Shilen. My new FP assembly arrived today, installed it and as expected, no change. (I was replacing the FP assembly anyway). It also gives me a rather short pin fall, 0.189". Not sure I'd trust that trigger for consistent ignition.

Took the trigger off, put a tuned XMP on it that I keep as an emergency spare. Pin fall back up to .225" which is better, but not ideal.

Maybe I'll call Shilen tomorrow and see what's up.

Will keep things updated.

Well, this trigger is going back to Shilen. Spoke to one of the tech's, he told me that a couple possible issues they've had were the roll pin holding the secondary lever will sometimes expand inside the secondary lever causing a tight spot, or possibly side plates may not be flat. I checked for side to side clearance and there is plenty. They also agreed that the pin fall was very short and the top lever may be out of spec.

So far, great customer service.

Will keep this thread updated.

Just got off the phone with one of the techs at Shilen. He found a couple things with my trigger, firstly that it's an older trigger, maybe 15+ years old. Secondly, the sear was cast on it and they now wire EDM cut them and the new one should give me another .030" of pin fall.

The reason for the secondary lever sticking and not resetting was the trigger pull weight spring was a heavier spring than what they use now and it was applying enough pressure against the shoe to keep the secondary lever from resetting and hanging up.

Excellent customer service and I should have it back next week.

Just received my invoice from Shilen, for $45 I cant buy a new trigger, so I'm happy.

Hope to get this rifle going soon!

To close out this thread, today I received my trigger back and the reset issue is gone and pin fall is now about 0.221". Not the ideal amount of pin fall, but way better than it was! This pin fall is about the minimum I feel provides consistent ignition, I'd like to have closer to .240"-.250", but there is some cock on close now.

I'm very pleased with the customer service I received and now with this trigger adjusted and functioning well I'm happy. It's not as nice feeling as a Jewell, but it's a perfectly serviceable trigger that will not be the cause of any dropped points.
