30 Nosler 230gr+ Velocity expectations

I’m not finding much real world results from the 30 Nosler running 230gr+ bullets. The rifle I’m working on has a fairly long throat that is even a bit long even for the 215gr weight class. Just curious what velocity is realistic for the 30 Nosler running 230-250gr bullets. Barrel is a 1-9 5r Bartlein. Thanks!

With over .200 freebore and using N570 I would expect to hit pressure over 3000 fps, probably mid 3k. As far as the accuracy node the setup will dictate that. I would say with the same throat H1000 would be in the upper 2900s or maybe a little over 3k. I ran some tests with a few of my 30 noslers but I did not feel they went fast enough to out run the 215.

You guys are spot on. With 230gr Berger hybrid targets I’m starting to see faint extractor marks at 81gr H1000 running 2870fps and very slight increase in bolt lift at 85gr running 3028fps. I’m not sure what to think about the 73fps jump from 83gr to 84gr. This is all from once fired ADG brass.

Thinking about shooting from 83-85gr for group size/es.

My notes:

78 - 2762

79 - 2808 huge shift in poi

80 - 2844 same poi

81 - 2870 - starting to see faint extractor mark

82 - 2914

83 - 2926

84 - 2999??

85 - 3028 - bolt lift starting to get heavy

86 - 3062 - poi jumped up .5 moa

Charges 79-82 touching and 83-85 touching, 86 went .5 moa high.

What is the barrel length?

I had no problem hitting 2950 with Berger 230s and IMR 7828 SSC in my .300 WSM F-Class rifle, but that has a 34" barrel. The velocities seemed a little low with so much capacity. I was not able to manage that load on the bags and dropped to 2865 with H4831 SC, which was barely manageable. All that was in a 22# rifle.

I am getting ready to start load testing the 230’s in the 30 with H1000. Looking at the notes from distantfoe I’m probably gonna start at 79 gr and work up.
Everything I’ve seen makes me think everyone is using retumbo with the heavier bullets. I just have h1000 to try right now.

Retumbo is my preference but my stash is reserved for a new 7mm barrel. The h1000 shot okay, nothing I would be satisfied with. Be careful and watch for pressure, other than the long throat on this rifle something is different as it’s not showing pressure like we thought it would. I’m sure the adg brass is helping.

For what it’s worth if this throat wasn’t so long I’d run 215s over h1000.

I might have to just wait and pick up retumbo then. I’d like to get the 230s to shoot. I’m running nosler brass.

if you can find find IMR 8133, that is a great alternative to Retumbo.....I substituted it for Retumbo in my 28 Nosler, got very similar performance and never went back.....I have found it to be very tem stable as well.
