6PPC Chambering Problems

I am having a problem with some 6PPC brass someone gave me. I have a Remington 6PPC trued up action with a Shilen barrel with .262 neck The brass overall case lengths run around 1.505. I adjusted my Redding full length sizing die to where the die just touches the shell holder. I then lubed the cases and full length resized them. I then tried to chamber a few to see if the bolt closed easily and the cases won't chamber without forcing them (and some wouldn't chamber at all). I then adjusted the die down a 1/8 of a turn and the cases still won't chamber. Ideas on how to fix my problem would be appreciated!

Forgot to mention the brass had been used in a .262 necked rifle - I measured the outside diameter of the necks of the cases and they are running around .259-.260.

Have those cases been neck turned? For a .262" neck you need brass turned to .0085" neck thickness or less. Also those cases seem a bit long for a PPC chamber. Most PPC chambers are 1.500". I don't think a regular full length is going to bring those necks down enough for that chamber. You need a bushing die.

Did you measure outside neck diameter with bullet or loaded diameter?

Trim to 1.490 and measure the neck over a seated bullet with calipers. Are you trying to get a case in there sized with no bullet or loaded with a bullet

If you have the reamer print, check to see if the case length is too long. What neck bushing were you using when you sized it?

Smoke a case up or color it black with a sharpie, try to chamber it and see if you can tell what is touching. Free brass can be a PIA sometimes. WD

Do you have any brass that’s been fired successfully in this rifle? If so, check the diameter down near the base and up by the shoulder. Then check the shoulder length. Odds are good one of these three is your fit issue.

agreed.

It is not uncommon to ind brass that has been fired in a chamber that for what ever reason, is oversized on the web just forward of the extractor groove. It’s very difficult to get it sized back down.

The cases have been neck turned in addition my Redding die is a bushing die and I’m using a .258 bushing (I also have a .257 bushing). I am trying to chamber just the case not a loaded round. As I push the bolt forward it makes contact with the case and just stops. I can’t even begin to lower the bolt handle. I’ll take some more measurements.

James,

You most likely will find that the web dimension is just a thou or two bigger then your chamber and it is very hard to find a die to fix it....been there do that!

As indicated above, more then likely you are making contact at one or more of three places. First what is the length of your brass? This is probably least likely. Also, if the outside diameter of your neck is larger than the chamber, it will not load.

Second could be at the shoulder. Possible. How much are you bumping your shoulder?

Third at the web/base. Your full length die may not be sizing the base because the brass is not being pushed into the die far enough.

I'm thinking maybe the best solution is to purchase some new brass - my other brass has quite a few firings through it. Does anyone know where I can purchase some new Lapua 6PPC brass already neck turned and ready to go? I had previously purchased some prepared brass from Ron Hoehn who sadly has passed away.

Thanks

I have some new brass turned by Ron but it is sized down too 22ppc. I assume it would be possible to size back up.
