This Is How You Do It...Manatee 600

Big turnout at the 600 yard IBS-style club paper shoot today. We practiced "social distancing" on the line by only using every-other bench and keeping people apart. If shooters got close, my 33 years of teaching taught me how to us a PA system and "scold" in a socially acceptable manner.

The competition was keen and the fun was universal. We had been cooped up too long so the huge double- relay crowd was quite satisfying to see with benches filled.

One of our people walked away with the results sheet so I am doing this out of memory. Smallest group prize was for a 1.1" 50 with 4 x's that I shot.

Sorry for being so "ugly". Don't tell Alex I used a Krieger barrel in 6 BRA on a rifle I rarely use. Pure luck.

Following that group were two fine 1.6" ones done by both Richard McNamara and Jerry Jarrett. Jerry took the second place by something like .003".

Al Kelly came close to the perfect "Closest To the X". Look at the picture and see. Tom Anderson was super close with two shots on the "X" that covered it from both sides. Tightest shooting on the "X" we ever saw with others hitting it also.

When it comes to the highest four-target score, both Mark Niezabitowski and I tied with fine scores of 195 points out of 200. Mark had 3 "X"s while I ended up with 7 to take another first place. We both had twin-50's during the shoot.

Many showed up to see our fun. It was kind of like being 'crowded apart'. Some wore masks, Dale Fields had a hand sanitizing station in the back of his truck and even the Richard Prince target crew followed distance recommendations. Big John wanted to punish us with his "Punisher' shirt. Well at least he looked good from the back.

If your club is open you can do a shoot and keep the shooters apart. It takes some planning using multiple relays, every-other benches, keeping shooters apart at set-up and while not shooting in their relay. Then you have to deal with getting out the completed targets and doing the awards. It takes some effort but this is how we do it at Manatee in south Florida.

Thank you Larry and Al B and Rich Prince for running the show and congrats for a very nice group and high score CaptainMal
It was nice to be able to shoot again, I've seen a lot of happy faces today after a severe case of wuhan flu cabin fever, hopefully we can do it again next month.

Very good to see you guys shooting again.
Oh oh ... the secret is out. Thanks for the words. Planning and set-up to do it with distancing control and permission was a bit tricky. I would actually consider passing out a copy of the "rules" to all that attended in the future. It is oh so natural to get together, talk "shop" and meet to share ongoing results.

In spite of those constraints I have been deluged with "thanks" from many in attendance. Members of other clubs may find this motivational.

Oh - had to do an edit. That old Krieger on the Kodiak BRA had 1,400 rds through it before the shoot. I just use it for steel fun but had a pile of old ammo loaded so ..."what the heck". Maybe we should age our ammo? I corrected my final score after now looking at my targets. Get so busy I have little time but for a glance. Make it 7 X's. Pure luck.

Now get Marks' rifle built. He is stompin' to "beat me like a rented mule".

Glad you guys are back at it I hope things keep opening slowly. If NC don’t get going we are going to be behind here . Our problem also has to do with Our Governor he has to be told what to do by Nancy it appears so who knows. Got my fingers crossed that the Georgia deal stays good at least we will have somewhere to shoot .

Dave,

We are all in a "state of flux" because of both the virus itself and the various regulations. No rational shooting club would want to deal with an incident that violates regulations in affect and/or is remotely liable for actual virus contraction. Sure can see that any scheduled club shooting activity is subject to closure and/or modification at any time.

If the Georgia shoot on May 30th comes to be, most likely none of our Manatee members will attend. We HAVE to deal with a reality of not having an actual physical meeting but having a physical meeting so that at least 20 members are present to install the officers. If not, the club bylaws say we are shut down. May 30th is the deadline and the day we are going to try that. We are trying to schedule a steel shoot on our benchrest range that day, keep social distancing and also provide a spacious venue, with members present, to do that meeting. To facilitate that I just ordered three more PA speakers and attendant materials to make the area better for a spacious gathering with a better quality audio.

Hope all goes well with your shooting plans and we can all get together soon.

Dave,
