A fun thread, what wildcat do YOU wish was mainstream

And what would you like to see it used for? And call it? Hindsight is 20/20 i wish i went to school for gunsmithing and aerospace tolerance machining.

I saw a picture of .22 pokey (25acp necked down to 22) and it got me thinking about neat wildcats I wish existed. Lets hear your ideas.

I wish .22 pokey was a thing for magazine forward Olympic styled target pistols.

9mm necked down to .224 for auto loaders, 55gr fmj for range ammo, vmax or gamekings for self defense. Call it the 224 liberty

10mm necked down to .224 but using 80-90 gr bullets. Yes it would be quite long for the grip, but probably do able. I would like it for long distance handgun target shooting, in custom 1911s or maybe mag forward target pistols. Not sure about a name, but 22 autoturbo sounds pretty 80s cheesy. (I like 80s cheese)

And finally for my contender pistol, a centerfire 224 caliber that is subsonic. 1050 fps with those 90gr 224 bullets would make a sweet windbucking 200 yard paper puncher.

Rifle cartridges? Im not big into rifle cartridges to be honest, but im curious what ideas y'all have.

I would too. Im not a rifle shooter (awful shoulder injuries) but anything that is compatible with ars works great in contender pistols. I have been in love with subsonic 300blk for years now.

I believe Rock Island Armory already has this one wrapped up. 22 TCM. Factory ammo & firearms (1911's) available chambered for it.

I have what amounts to 3 lines of wildcats already designed. Just need the major dollars to do casings, reamers, firearms/barrels, pressure testing equipment.

I would love to see the .260 Ackley Improved standardized. I love the cartridge. Fire forming, not so much.

With today's powders and brass, it'll run with the 6.5-.284 and it's much easier on barrel steel, in my experience.

I did a little QL research and the lowly 22WMR rimfire has enough case capacity to launch a 70gr bullet@1300fps at standard overall length and within the 25k psi pressure.
I really think that it could be the bright diamond of subsonic 224! It does pose a few interesting obstacles until someone produces a factory load.

Its a cut down 223 iirc, and uses lighter than 55gr bullets. Those are neat cartridges though, I wish it would catch on. I like the 5.7 also, but until glock puts one out or they make a 1911 chambered in it im not buying.

But a necked down 10mm shooting 90gr 224s.... now thats a dream. Magazine forward of the trigger, like Olympic. 22s, with a fixed barrel and a target trigger, oh yes.

Edit: im a huge fan of long distance handgunning for clarification. So a heavy, large handgun isn't an issue. Wouldn't be used for carry or self defense. Thats what boring glock 19s are for.

My second vote is the 9.3x62 mauser is extremely similar to Ackley style cartridges and it should be necked down to 6mm and everything in between. Somewhere in the 6.5 being about perfect.

I have a friend who used to shoot a lot of rim-fire silhouette. He would pull the 22 WMR bullets and replace with center fire match bullets. Dont remember the weight or brands but he was quite successful.

While all inventors would like the notorioty of their baby, the heck with it!
If someone with deeper pockets than i can bring my idea to fruitition then i say go for it!

My designs revolve around the 426 Westley Richards casing.
Shortening to 2.50", 2.44", 2.00", 1.5" and necking to all popular calibers.

The idea behind it is to use a standard 0.473" bolt face & increase powder charge.
Obviously the feed lips would need to be altered. Dies for the WSM, RSAUM, etc could possably be used as the base dimension on the Westley Richards case is the same as the 404 Jeffery case that parents those.

The issue would be getting someone to manufacture casings with hard enough head/base to control deformation at the extractor groove.
Much the same issues they had developing the 338 Lapua casing.

I'm more in favor of the reverse here...do away with Lapua 6.5-284 brass and make straight 284 already, PLEASE!!!! Why are we sitting on our thumbs on this? Can't ask Lapua anymore, did that like a hundred times now. These days, no reason why necking-up process needs to be implemented. Perhaps Peterson brass will take up the slack with its 284 brass.

I have emailed back and forth with a rep. from Laupa and he said they had no plans in the foreseeable future.
Maybe I will try Peterson.

I would like to see a 250 AI or 25 CMoor standardized. They are both about the same and maybe it would help Berger go back to making some bullets in the 87 gr up to about 105.

But until the average Joe Hunter gets convinced, think 6.5 CMoor, that they need a 25 cal rifle, it won't happen. In the not too distant past, there were at least 4 custom bullet makers making 25 cal bullets. Now we are down to one making cup and core bullets. There are a couple of makers making 25 cal Barnes type hunting bullets but none advertised much here.

The 9.3X62 is close to the 35 Whelan, it's a .366" bore diameter as opposed to the Whelan's .358" bore. It shares the same 12MM Mauser/30-06 case head diameter and most of the other case dimensions are quite similar. Cases can be made from 30-06 brass if need be. Move up to the 9.3X64 cartridge and it's performance is in the .375H&H neighborhood.
