Roy Hunter bullets/ testing

When you guys show where the bullet is in the case neck with a bullet outside the case, be aware I had bullets from a custom bullet maker vary over .060 in OAL length. Needless to say that is a lot in how you show where the it is in the neck.... jim

I got one that was an inch longer, Roy wanted to see if I'd catch it since I don't sort them anymore. I did!

The reamer that was shorter doesn't shoot as good as the longer fb. one, but if you use it and run a throater in and make it the same Free bore it shoots really good. ....jim
But you dont know why unless you measure it. .012" in fb length wouldnt make one shoot but not the other. Fb diameter and lead angle both effect touch length and those 2 do effect how they shoot. If you fixed it by throating it .012 my bet is you fixed the diameter or the angle.

I had the original Dasher reamer that was .2435 FB Dia. and .115 FB length and it shot great I had JGS. make one the same except ,2438 FB dia. but not he comparator they were different FB length of .012 plus the dia was little different but not near .0003. and the newer reamer didn't shoot as good as the old one. so the throat was lengthened .012 and the same barrel come to life. Why ?? beats me... but it is noticeable in a bunch of barrels...... It sure doesn't matter any more I think this is it's last barrel..... jim

Back on Roy's "A" bullets, I have done some 200 yard testing on a private range that past two weeks. First test showed me that the speeds of those bullets in a Dasher was obscenely high with test loads using Reloader 15. Now I was using a Stolle Panda that had trigger trouble that was successfully fixed by Eric Bostrom. Groups were rough during that initial testing due to the trigger.

Fixed, I dropped the test loads 1/2 gr from start last time and found the perfect velocity ( 3030-3040 fps) for this 30" barrel. Just a +.005 jam for all tests and no tuner changes to make all groups under .2MOA. Right before and right on my target velocity those groups were .1 MOA ( .2" @ 200 yards).

Not going to the 600 range for a few weeks due to the virus restrictions the wife has me on. Just happy to see so much promise early on with those bullets.

Jim, what I am saying is the freebore length could have been spot on but the fb diameter or lead angle could have moved the touch point more than .012 and still been in spec. They both have an effect on the touch point and are independent of fb length.

Here’s five of the Hunter 103A’s at 1K out of a 6BR Improved. I’m pretty sure this load is ready to shoot in the ones if I get “premium” conditions. The two targets, shot on different days with this load, measure 2.1” and 3.2” with 1.5” vertical on both. There was wind on both days.
