6XC ground truth as of Jan 2020?

Nope and Nope. I just confirmed what I came to recently suspect. That Criterion's 2004 designed reamer was intended for 6XC rounds made from re-formed .22-250 cases. So much for having faith that drop-in barrel manufacturers actually keep up on the news.

More to follow, hopefully in the not too distant future. About the time you all get over not having to see my posts so often and in such depth. ;)

Ha! As a fellow 6xc shooter with chamber/brass issues I enjoyed your thread. Looking forward to your follow up.

Hey Hoot, people think ya started this thread!!:D I guess it’s yours now!!

Hey Hoot, people think ya started this thread!!:D I guess it’s yours now!!

Though I came to this dance (6XC) about 16 years too late, i chose this caliber over many because through research, I felt it had both the most success in its flexibility as well as a treasure trove of existing technical information from those like yourself, who have been there, done that. If I had not taken exception with the pressure signs, I would be happily nibbling around the edges, learning as I went and enjoying working up successful recipes across a wide range of bullet choices, maybe improving my skills at shooting longer distances. along the way. As a matter of fact, that's just what I had been enjoying doing the first year out there. It wasn't until reading that the issue I was experiencing was not what many successful members here were experiencing, that it occurred to me that something was amiss. Unlike many competitors here, I'm just into it for the joy of learning through experimentation and expanding my mind. I'm a part Walter Middy and part "Mcgyver" kind of guy and a tinkerer. I pay my way be being a cracker jack troubeshooter by trade for the past 45 years. As such I have become accustomed to reasoning out my problems through the application of theory (see sig) and learning by doing. There is a wealth of information available in various threads around this forum and I'm grateful for the open sharing of information.

So, I flit around like a fly at a picnic. Landing upon different tables and leaving with tidbits of information germane to my current issue, assuming I don't get shoo'd away. I understand internal ballistics pretty well and mechanics to boot, so I'm trying to harvest useful experiences you all are kind enough to share. Some day, like on other shooting forums I frequent, perhaps I can help others others help themselves. If my pockets were deeper, I would have just paid more informed and capable artisans to solve my problem for me but the satisfaction would not be as sweet.

To that end, I read a lot of related threads, pitch my tent in some related to my issue, pull up a log and sit by the fire, gathering some warmth from information here and there. I do feel a little guilty for butting in on threads but just like that fly, I go where the food is. Not all of it was what I'm hungry for but I'm grateful for the opportunity to make that decision and some of the information I run across, while not useful right now, I'm still digesting all the same. Who knows what my next hurdle will be. I will never be putting what I'm learning, to use to compete with you all. I'm too busy competing with myself. Still so much to learn... I'll turn 66 on Halloween (go ahead, get it out of your system ;)) I'm used to it, and I hope to enjoy a long retirement honing my skills even further than the previous years have already allowed me to do.

You folks are my whet stone.

It’s been fun going back and forth. You seem like a smart guy. Looking forward to future threads. This one’s been a good one. We’re going to expect more correspondence when ya retire!!

...snip... You seem like a smart guy...snip

If I were as smart as hard headed, I wouldn't have spent the last two short shooting seasons up here at first ignoring and then muddling around with this issue and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

On other forums, I'm known for my lengthy, image rich, Range Reports on relatively recent calibers. This caliber, being as mature as it is, I would just be re-hashing what no doubt has already been covered ad-infinitum. I'll wade in on conversations never-the-less, when I have something to add or agree with. Those opinions, along with $2.00 will get you a real good cup of coffee. ;)

Hoot,.. Call Criterion !!! They have probably heard about, this "issue" from others by now and I seriously doubt, that, they want ANY, Bad publicity or, un-happy customers ! They already HAVE an awesome, accuracy recommendation from, 99 Percent of their users ! I was, a Gun Smith and Gun Shop owner for over, 20 years and found that, very, VERY, few manufacturers would NOT, "stand behind",.. their Products !
The one or, two that, didn't, WE paid for, out of, OUR Pockets IF, we thought that, the Customer had, a REAL Problem and was,.. right ! YUP,.. Our Business and reputation, thrived !
This is a SIMPLE fix for them,.. cut a few thoundth's off end of bbl and re-ream / POLISH, your Chamber !
Your Chamber looks,.. ROUGH to ME,.. TOO !! The .200 Web Dim needs to be .470 and the Neck NEEDS to be, .276 dia. Minimum and .277 - .278 would be,.. BETTER ! Should be, a "NO Turn", Neck !
I'd BET, Money that, Jim at NSS will take care of you ! Don't be,.. bashful !

Thanks for the advice Lefty but I already replaced the barrel. Can't report on whether that corrected the problem though as comfortable shooting weather left about the time I did so and won't return until late March, early April. I intended to report back after I've had a chance to see if that fixed it. I had emailed Criterion way back when the problem first began, asking them for help. They didn't even bother acknowledging that they got it. I do agree that Jim as NSS, is a good guy but he didn't chamber the barrel. Water over the dam now...

Hoot,.
Are you going to make, a "Tomato Stake" out of, the Old Barrel ??
I might be interested in it,.. IF not wanting, too much $$$'s
I'm almost ready for, a 6 XC bbl

I think you may have answered your own question there, friend....

All 6XC chambers are not created equal.
AGREED to, this statement and, I'll ADD to that,..
The TYPE of Brass that, you buy and use, ( Case Neck, "Thickness" ) will determine your "success" and or, FAILURE with,.. the 6 XC Cartridge, in your, barrel.

I’d wonder if the batch direct from Petersen was from the first run that was known to have problems?

After that issue, I’m pretty sure SSS was the only one selling the 6xc brass. I know SSS currently has the best pricing.
Yes, known "Problem's" with, the first batch and,.. THICK, Necks more than, likely !
Norma Brass with, an 87 grain V- Max, miked, .2705 and there should be, NO problem, in a .275 Dia neck, Chamber. Jim Brigg's at, Northland had NOT heard of, anyone having, "problems" with, Criterion Barrels, in 6 XC !
YUP,.. I,.. ASKED, "the question" and ordered me,.. a New Barrel !

I recently, installed, a New 6 XC, 1-7.5 Twist, Heavy Sporter, CRITERION Barrel, reamed with, THIS ^ Chamber Reamer and am having, NO "problems" using, Norma Brass / Forster Dies, so BUY with, CONFIDENCE !
Have shot, a couple of, 4 shot group's with, Berger 108 Elite Hunters in, the 3's and 4's already with, all holes,.. touching. I expect when barrel is, "Broken in" and proper Load found, to be,.. in the 2's.
In case anyone's curious, Rem 700 action, this Hvy Sporter 24" bbl. with .705 dia muzzle, HS Prec. Sporter stock, Burris 6.5 X 20 Scope/ Zee Rings, WEIGH'S,.. 9.5 Pounds and Balances, perfectly !
My Rifle's, NOT gonna Win, a Bench Rest Tournament maybe, but look out,.. Varmints !

And,.. IF, you want to use, .22-250 Brass ( or other Brass with, THICK Necks ) I'd suggest going to, the 6 XC II Chambering, designed by, Robert Whitley for THIS type of, usage. Win .22-250 Brass over an 87 grain V-Max Bullet, mic'd,. .274 diameter ( NOT GOOD in, a .275 dia, "necked" chamber ! ). So you NEED, a .276 dia Neck, Minimum ! My 2 cents and, the "Ground TRUTH" as,..
I know IT.

I have three XC's A 8 twist, a 7.5 twist and a 7 twist.
All three are very accurate with berger hunting VLD's ....although I haven't totally finished load development with the 7.5 twist
I mainly shoot 115,s with the 7 twist and 105,s with the other two, although all do well with the 115 HVLD,s

I shoot a lot at 800 yds because that that is the most convenient for me.

I have shot 800 yard , 3 shot groups of 1 1/4 with the 7 twist and 1 3/8 with the 8 twist.

nothing but good to say about the cartridge
