Winter target project finished

Finally got enough sunshine to rebuild my 100 yd target! It has done pretty well for 3yrs but finally gave up when my son was doing a final check before leaving for Phoenix this year. Those heavy 30s at 3K plus will do a number on 3/8 AR500 even on a 45° if you are putting 5 shots into 3/8th of an inch or better. Three years of use actually stretched a pocket into the center of the plate. I cut it loose from the frame and thought I could flatten it back by setting both ends on a 6X6 and driving a big tractor over it, didn't happen, ended up driving a D6 cat up on it and all it would do is straighten it out and when you drove off it would spring back. So I just turned it around backwards and added another plate behind it with 1 inch of play so it can give on impact, I think it will work. The 3 hundred and 6 hundred sleds are far enough out that I haven't had a problem. Kinda important for the damn things to work when you have cattle grazing behind them.

Really brings back memories, all good ones. I remember sailing around the pasture pulling a 15 foot batwing shredder. I don't recall the name, but it had that selectomatic transmission with about
12 or 16 forward gears. when you got into some thick stuff just shift on the go to a lower gear and keep the rpms churning.:) Ah yes, and the smell of that diesel coming off that front stack;)

Nice target and backer!
From this angle, if I didn't know it was you under that helmet...
I'd swear I was looking at myself!

I wish to hell I was still 37 like that young man! He's a good guy that helps me out from time to time. His dad and I were good friends for 60 yrs. till he passed away several years ago. I can still do pretty good but not like I could then. John

Yes, those were called Select-O- Speeds, 16 fwd gears. Mine are both 8 speed manuals. But these are what we are using now....IMG_20170723_065402837_HDR.jpg

Nice up grade. You don't get much for old tractors and if you can keep 'em running that's great. There all paid for and completely depreciated.
Ah Ha, a Bat Wing shredder. Makes quick work of big pastures.

Yes it does, with the 135hp tractors you can run over 6mph and with 2 machines running your taking 32' per round and you can get over a hundred acre field pretty quick.....IMG_20170724_201325435.jpg
