Bad luck stories of shooting/reloading/gunsmithing

I don't need to tell anyone that setting a 209 shotshell primer on the floor and tapping it with a hammer is a bad idea. I knew a kid (~14) that tried it.
Or the guy in my 6th grade class who thought an anvil, a nail, a hammer and a solid point 22 were all you needed to make a hollow point....

They picked the shrapnel outta his guts.

Poured a bottle of Varget in the Chargemaster and it all came out the side.

Did same thing a few months later with w-748. Haven't done it a third time...yet.

Filled case with powder before priming.

Squished my thumb between the shell holder and the die.

Couldn't zero the scope on my 10-22. Maxed out the elevation and was still 2 feet low at 100m. Objective was on top of the rear sight.

Left all my targets at the range.
+1 on the Chargemaster drain :)

I once hunted on a lease w a very old gentleman whom we all tried to look after. He had been having a bad run of luck one season so a buddy told the old timer to hunt his stand. There was a cull buck that religiously came out every morning around 9 and needed to be harvested.
Now my buddy had two full size truck mirrors on the front corners of his blind. Well....after that morning, he only had one. Poor old mister old timer blew that bad boy right off. We only discovered it after two hours of looking for said deer that our old buddy knew "damn good and well" he didn't miss. I reckon that sweet old guy went to the grave swearing he didn't aim at that mirror.

I once, for whatever reason, removed and reinstalled the screw from the zoom adjuster on a Simmons scope. Went out in a few days and at 100 yards and wasn't hitting a whole piece of posterboard. The rifle always shot well under 1 MOA. WTF? Went to 50 yards and still couldn't hit it. Tried adjusting the elevation on the scope to no avail. Went to about 25 yards and still couldn't hit it. Then I noticed mud splattered on the board. The elevation dropped all the way and I was shooting into a mud puddle below the target. Went home, took it apart and found the problem. The scope still works ok. Gee I felt silly!
How many times before I remember to take extra care removing all the ball powder from my RCBS powder dispenser before using it for extruded, always pollutes the first pan , throw it away...……..again

I showed up for a rebarrel with out the bolt. That was kinda embarrassing.

Open the gun bag and realize I left the bolt at home when getting to the range.

I’ll admit it... I’ve dumped powder out of the hoper drain 3x (maybe 4)on the chargemaster.
Yep, dumped powder sans primer too.

OK ! Been trying to forget this one.In 1986 when I first got my UZI ,I loaded 1k rounds on a single stage press. The powder thrower ran out of powder and DUMB ASS didn't check it .The next day I grabbed some ammo and went shooting. Some rounds went bang some did not.I stacked THREE rounds in a barrel on an UZI at full auto with out incident. If one of those rounds would have been hot my grizzly mug wouldn't be so beautiful.Talk about God looking out for IDIOTS !So when I'm accused of acting like a crusty old Nun around firearms,I reply "Thank You ! I've earned it ."

A gunsmith friend told me about someone doing that with a S&W Model 29. Stacked up bullets in the barrel until the cylinder wouldn't turn. I think he had to dremel through the barrel to get it open.

Just recently I loaded a tray of 50 6.5x47's with powder. When I finished I pushed my chair away from the table only to have my dog who had been patiently waiting at my side jump up on my lap and manage to hit and flip the tray which went airborne landing on the floor with cases and powder going everywhere. But I still love him anyway.

Not reloading but entertaining ... This is a long one so bear with me .. Started trapping a few years back to eliminate some of the nest predators at my farm . Decided to use bucket sets and 220 conibears to get the job done . While talking to my wise old uncle he told me to set the traps upside down so coons would push down on the trigger when entering the bucket ..... Well I dyed and waxes my traps , cut notches into the sides of the buckets and all looks good . I decide to set a trap into the bucket on the bench to see how they fit . Remembering my uncles advice I turned the trap over and inserted it ... Upside down, the safeties fell off and the waxed trap sprung .... On both thumbs !! After struggling for over 15 minutes I managed to pry the trap off ..... Please don't ask what happened when my buddy shows up and I show him how it happened , you can't outrun a fresh waxed 220 ....
