On the morning of February 19, 1945, the invasion of Iwo Jima started. The first troops to land was the 28 Regiment of the 5th MarDiv. By the end of the day, 50,000 Marines of the 4th and 5th Division will have landed.
An attempt to land the 3rd MarDiv was made the following day, but was held up by rough seas. They finally came ashore on Feb 21. That put the total invasion force at about 70,000 Marines.

The goal was to capture an airfield. The airfield would be used to launch and recover aircraft used in the bombardment of the Japanese mainland.

There was about 22,000 Japanese troops on the island that was well prepared for the invasion. Iwo Jima covered only 8 square miles. The preparatory bombardment did little good because the Japanese were dug into 11 miles of tunnels that were almost connected from one end of the island to the other.

The battle lasted 37 days when the island was declared secure. There was high casualties on both sides. Only about 800 Japanese were captured or surrendered. On the American side, there was approximately 6000 KIA.

An Add On

By comparison, at Normandy, the US landed 57,500 troops on shore according to the internet.

And to think there are people in this country, a lot of them, that want to squander all that sacrifice of our countries forefathers away. Just unbelievable!I am blessed with a wonderful friend and neighbor that was on that tiny little island 75 years ago as a 20-year-old young man. I am absolutely in awe any time I am around him and think of his bravery and sacrifice. His name is Norm and I ask that we all say a prayer for him today. He is actually doing quite well for his age. God bless all the men and women of our arm services and let us never ever forget.

6000 of our people killed in action, Imagine the graves, the people who loved them and their kids, God Lawd.

I appreciate their sacrifice each day.

Imagine the outrage from the news media, if the DOD reported that we were having 162 KIA's per day in the middle east......but we have the enemy on the ropes.

Totally agree we would all be much better off today if our country as a whole had the backbone and bravery that was hurled forward on that day and during those trying times. I truly appreciate and honor all those that gave it all and sacrificed everything for our country. Why on earth some want to throw it all away is beyond my comprehension. GOD BLESS AMERICA ONCE AGAIN IS MY PRAYER. AMEN.

Thank your neighbor for me when you see him
