First F-Class match questions

Edward Manning

I want to shoot F-Class open

Can you people tell me if a Ruger PRS 6.5 Creedmoor with a bipod and the muzzle break removed qualifies. I read the rules but still not sure. What would you recommend for a back rest?

Thank you all for the response

You can probably shoot that. Just like you said, no muzzle brake. Good way to jump in and get into it. You wont win, but you will gain good experience and knowledge to end up getting better gear and shooting better. Lots of skills to learn. Good way to start.

What kind of bipod? Is it the ski-/sled-type, or a traditional bipod that will be pre-loaded? The type of bipod dictates the type of rear bag you need. For a ski-/sled-type bipod, you want an eared rear bag of the appropriate height so the rifle can track properly. With a traditional bipod, you'll have better results using a large squeezable bean bag of some sort to help you control your elevation.

Until you decide you like it and what venue you want to shoot in, I would just use whatever you have. The bag will change depending on if you stay with bipod (traditional) or bipod with skis, or go to a front rest with a joy stick.
If you get into the sport, no doubt your rifle will change dramatically and that will dictate what accessories you will need. So don't rush in too fast.

I am interested in the responses to this thread as well.

Can those recommending certain style rear bags provide links on the exact type of bags you are recommending and sources to buy them from ?

That is what I used to shoot my first F class match. I used a squeezable rear bag (rectangular so it had 3 height options) filled with air soft pellets. I did ‘roll my own’ ammunition but not an impediment for your first few matches most likely. I bought a Bob-sled to single load (as per F- class rules) but one canbe made from a section of pvc pipe.

Have a blast!

I shot a fairly stock Stevens 200 that was rechambered to 7mm-08AI.
Not ideal by any means!
Had a good time, enjoyed the company, and learned what i could.

I used an Atlas copy bipod, and a rear Caldwell bag with the ears. Had to keep resetting after every shot.
I think the shape of the stock has more to do with it. I had the traditional hunting wedge shaped rear stock. A flat bottom would have really helped!

take your muzzle brake off as you said, Take what you have and enjoy yourself. There will be plenty of things to learn and see while there. Mix it up with some of the shooters. Ask questions but above all have fun.

It’s a regular bipod

Yes it qualifies. You'll be in F-Open. Show up, look around, listen twice as much as you talk, and have a good time.

Rear rest depends on your stock. If you're a green shooter any rear bag will work. Don't overthink it.

Agree, All kinds of good pictures on the web of the multitude of options for front and rear rests for F Open..

Just Very little to zero info on what brand or model anything is and where to buy it from to go along with those pictures...
Never mind what works and is worth buying and what doesn't work.

Ed has received great advice and is in a good spot for a new person starting out by starting simple in F Open just using his existing bipod and basically any old rear bag.

If he likes it and decides to continue he will have to figure out who makes and sells those fancy joy stick or mini ski's front rests...

I’m with all above. Shoot, have fun and learn. Some will snicker at your choice but those aren’t the people you want to hang with anyway. Find people who will answer a few questions about whatever you’re curious about and if you show up to enough of the same matches someone may even let you drive their gun during a practice. I shot for almost 2 years with an RPR in 6.5 on ski pods but once you drive a Ferrari your world will change. But don’t go down that road unless you really enjoy f-Class which is why you should just go and have fun for now until you know if it’s the discipline for you.

small squeeze bag - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1021656433
larger squeeze bag - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1015174851?pid=289666
either is good for AR-Tactical or using a precision rifle as a starter f-class rig

rabbit ear bag - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1015252032?pid=916644
Good for f-tr with a classic angled stock. Vertical can be controlled by nudging the angled stock forward or back in the bag. IMO the fabric versions and cheap leather copies are not worth having. Get the protektor leather or go back to the squeeze bags.

full 'benchrest' bag - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1019021038
Best for f-open or f-tr with a joypod where you can basically let the gun sit in the bags and aim with the rest.
space between the ears should be matched to a stock made with this kind of bag in mind.

I believe you can get front and rear bag riders for an RPR that allow using a typical f-open front rest and rear bag.

Ed actually emailed me yesterday asking about F Class Matches at NFGA as a new F Class shooter.

Me being the Range Governor at NFGA ( https://nfga.org/leveridge-range/ ) I am the primary contact for the range so I get the inquiries.
As you know I'm just an old fashioned service rifle shooter so when people ask me for advice on F Open and FTR gear suggestions I am not much help.
I referred Ed here as I know this forum has many F Class shooters.

Now that we added electronic targets at NFGA last season and ran a match for club members only to come shoot what they have to try shooting prone from 200 and 600 yards for the 1st time I have over 20 club members that want to get into Prone and F class.

What I want to do is write a basic primer to put on the website that can explain the basics of Gear for FTR and F Open.

Kzin gave just what I needed ( but more importantly pertinent info for the question Ed asked ) in his response to Ed's question about what to use for a rear bag.
Now I need the same for what to use for Bipods or fancy ski style or joy stick rests up front for F open to have what I need to write the article ( on something I know very little about )

Once i do get the outline of the article together for the nFGA website if i could run it by you for proofread . edit that would be very helpful.
The one I'm doing for Service Rifles for XTC shooting is easy for me... :-)
