Varget might have gone bad.

Just opened a sealed bottle of Varget and some of the sticks are shiny and some are dull with a greenish hue. About half and half. I've never used Varget so I don't know if this is normal. It smells a bit different than other powders I've used but not bad. Holding on loading until I hear from some of you folks.

Varget should be sort of greenish in appearance. You should be smelling diethylether from a newly opened bottle jug of Varget. It should have a rather pleasant organic solvent smell, but not sharp, acidic, or acrid. As @jepp2 asked, what is the date? How long have you had it and how was it stored?

Below is an image of Varget kernels (another unexpected benefit of the Teslong borescope) to which you can compare the appearance of your powder.

Mine was stored in the shop with A/C and heat. I think I may put it on the garden and try the 4166 I got yesterday. Any good loads for .223 with 55gr. Hornady fmjbt with cannelure using 4166?

Bad powder has a smell that's hard to mistake, ime. It's really rare for powder to go bad, sealed and kept in a climate controlled environment. Just look at milsurp powders and ammo, for example. I've seen 50-60 year old milsurp that was just fine and I'd bet a dollar to a dime it wasn't stored in ideal conditions. He, I've got some powder and primers both, in my shop, that are that old.

That's not Varget…. Varget is WAAAAYYYY smaller. o_O

If it smells normal and doesn't have clumps stuck together, it's most likely good.

It's mostly the way the light hits the surface of the kernels.

Varget in this picture is normal and good.

Not to get too far from the Varget thing I just got to the bottom of a 1 pound bottle of Norma 202 and the kernels have melted to the bottom of the plastic bottle. Never seen that before.... scary
