Future “Pride & Joy” entry/King Leopold Mauser

I just won an auction for a King Leopold FN Mauser. It’s not all original, so no reservations about making a custom out of it. I need to figure out what cartridge to use with open sights. No way that pretty crest is getting drilled.

Edit: I figured out how to swipe a pic from Gunbroker and show the actual one I got.

I feel like a kid at Christmas.

I was looking for more data for this crest and found a forum post about this exact rifle. Not the same model number, but the exact rifle I bought. Shhh...don’t tell nobody, but it was a forum for collectors. I think I’ll wait until I have it to register there and say “Hey guess what!”.

It’s a 1940 Belgian rifle with a replacement bolt that has a Swastika. It wants to be made into a sporter.

I stumbled onto a mint condition JC Higgins FN (made when I was in high school) at Cabello's last year. It had Warne bases installed. I re-barreled it to a .280 Rem, #4 Douglas contour stainless, and stocked it with a Richard's green camo, plywood Frontier model stock. Then added a Timney trigger & Leupold 4.5-14X40 VX3i with fast focus ocular, Burris Sig rings. My junk box had an original FN safety.

For iron sights, some kind of streamlined peep, shorty ramp front a .338-06 or a .35 Whelan. Does the King Leupold have a magnum bolt face and longer magazine? Probably not with the surplus 98 bolt? Then a .375 H&H would be my choice.

The funny 9.3 mm Euro round might be another choice.

I do like that round. RWS makes great brass for it.

This is out of production for now, but it’s hard to find a more classic classic cartridge for an old Mauser.
