9 twist 223

Way back (kinda) when the AR's took over the XTC game from the MIA's. Unknowingly, I bought a Bushmaster AR, 1:9 with a chrome lined barrel. Upgraded the sights, trigger and added a float tube, that stupid thing could shoot, mostly mid-range XTC 100, 200 & 300 yard ranges. Didn't even try 80 grainers, but the 52's and 69's SMK's hammered. (Maybe I just had better eyes then...probably the case).

Shot 52's at the short lines and 69's for SF prone out to 300. I'm sorry that I ever sold that upper as it was one of the best shooters, in spite of the chrome lined barrel. Used Rem 7 1/2 primers and Re-15 exclusively. It was a lot of fun.

I bought a box of 73 grain and a box of 75 grain bergers several years back I loaded the 73s with H4895 and they shoot so good at 600 I have never opened the box of 75s. From what I have read here it looks like I need to try them out.

Question for the 223 guru's out there.. whats the heaviest bullet i can use in a 9 twist 22 inch 223 barrel? Thanks

Very definitely the 69'rs SMK, TMK, 68 Hornaday, etc. as well as 73's and possibly 77 SMK's. The 75gr HPBT Hornaday may or may not shoot depending your barrels actual twist (vs published twist), and altitude/temperature you're shooting at. For example I could not get the 75 HPBT Hornaday to shoot out of my stock Savage BVSS barrel, unless the temps were over 100 F at my 698 ft altitude range and I drove it to the point of blanking primers. Other stock Savages had no problem shooting the 75.

One bullet you definitely should try is the 53 gr V-Max. Very good BC and excellent consistency. Shot some of my tiniest groups with that bullet over IMR3031 and at 500 yds it was deadly on 4 inch clays even in some pretty good winds.

The 53gr Vmax is just about all I shoot in my 223AI with its Hart 22in 9tw barrel and it stacks them up into tiny little groups. They have been very effective on coyotes for me over the years.
