Loads for a 22BR shooting the Berger 85.5 Hybrid

Plan to put an ABC 1-7”twist barrel on an accurized Remington action. I’ve decided on a HV contour and plan on putting it in a McMillan M-5 stock . 1.) What powders would you suggest trying? 2.) Barrel length? 3.) Would you suggest bushing the the firing pin and going to a smaller diameter tip? 4.)The primer I would like to have a hard cup . Anyone make a quality small rifle primer CASE 6BR to give a safety edge for pressure?

Evan,I would like to thank you as you’ve given me something to think about . One thing though is that we are shooting different bullets as I’ll be shooting the Berger 85.5 Hybrid. Does anyone produce small rifle primer cases that I can make the 22BR from?

Lapua 6 br. Neck it down. I use a fl non bushing Redding die. After necking down I run an expander mandrel through it.

As stated don't go 7 if you have not already ordered your barrel. Do a 7.5 or 7.7.

I am shooting 95gr smks, which will hold up btw, with a 7 twist out of a 22BR+ at 3030 fps. No stability issues out to 1500 yards. Going through the transonic zone really makes them go crazy. My point is you dont need that much twist in my opinion. Plan to get different opinions.

I shot a 22 creed, different but the same as it uses a 22 cal. bullet.
I wouldn't go to a 7 twist either. Get a 7.5 Berger say's you can use a 8 tw
with the 85.5 Here's a twist calculator http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/
I think Berger came out with the 85.5g cause a lot of us were having problems with bullets blowing up.
Most important thing I can tell you is keep your RPM's under 310,000 and if you can, closer to 300,000
Formula is, FPS x 720 = ( ) divide that number by your twist = RPM's
example, 3100fps x 720 = 2,232,000 divided by 7.5 (twist) = 297,600
The 22br uses less powder and creates less heat. So your barrel will not fire crack as fast
and not damage the jackets as fast. That and RPM's will kill a bullet fast
There has been other picture of bullet blowups. Here's mine
The white dot in the center is the bullet blowing up (won't up load the video)
Berger 90g @3300fps in a 7w

The 85.5 hasn't been out long, so we don't really know how tough it is, but if you happen to get a tight bore barrel then the 22BR has plenty of oommphh with a 7 twist to blow up bullets. I haven't tried 80s yet, but every single 90gn class bullet out there blows up if I shoot more than 3 in a row at any sort of a normal pace. I'm not alone in this problem, and I'd go farther than @Ranger188 does and suggest absolutely no more than 300k. I'm blowing them at 295-300k. If you get lucky and get a bore on the slightly large side, then everything will be fine. If you get unlucky and get a tighter bore, everything will blow up. It really sucks and it's simply not worth it.

What altitude and atmospheric conditions do you shoot in? You can quite likely shoot 85.5s out of an 8 twist if you're at any altitude, have high humidity, or have high temperatures. Any of these three make the air thinner and will require less spin to stabilize.

EDIT: I'm imagining that 3100fps or more will be entirely reasonable, based on the speeds I got with the 90s.

Taken the 85.5 to 3200+ out of a 23” 6.5 twist no issues. Currently using the 95’s at 3085 (wiiide node) with no issues. Barrel has about 600 rounds and going strong. Laser to 1000

The barrel I will be using, American Barrel Co. , is known for its finish and painstaking attention to detail so I’m not worried about a “rough”bore and I live in N.Ill. I don’t push loads to go for the upper node and go for max velocity. I’m interested basically in trying the 22BR with this bullet to 600yds. accurately and not beat the rifle or components up . Any suggestions like this are welcomed .

I did a ladder test with Varget last week. 31 grns was max with heavy bolt lift. 30.0 was giving 3150 at the muzzle, .020 off the lands, sd of 5.3. Lapua cases, Rem 7 1/2, Berger 85.5, Bartlein 8 twist 26 inches long. The whole ladder and seating test group was only slightly larger than the x ring on an sr target at 225 yards.
