In a post by BC'z He mentions that cedar was the wood the stock was made from.
What advantage would cedar have over other woods? Is it weight?
Kinda curious as I am surrounded by cedar trees and wondering if they are are a gold mine LOL.
Merry Christmas everyone and look forward to reply

In benchrest, the classes are seperated by weight.
The lighter the stock the more weight you can put into the barrel.

That stuff is a dent waiting to happen...
You just have to pamper your toys!
Phil: There are a few lighter woods that are used for stocks. Paulonia, cedar, Redwood... As mentioned above, the weight savings go into the barrel or optics. It’s a trade off. One of the reasons I like to use oil on my stocks is the ease of repair. Dings happen!;)
Your Cedar trees may be the “good ones” Cut one up to find out. The Cedar used in the Leonard stocks is Western Red Cedar. Might have grown up in Bc’zs back yard. A lot of the east coast cedars are more like Juniper bushes. Harder and denser.

Weight is the big factor after talking to Dusty. I've been asked by a couple members how much a paint job weighs. I weighed the stock before sanding/shaping as it came to me rough cut off the saw, after sanding, and agian after wet sanding for polish.
I removed 1oz 4 grams of material before priming. My finish weight was 1oz more than the rough cut stock.
Finished with simtech products knowing what @Preacher stated is a "dent waiting to happen."
I cleared the stock on Saturday afternoon, Monday morning when I went to wet sand for buffing I attempted to "push" my thumb nail repeatedly into the clear not a mark to be seen. I was impressed and said to myself
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
My friend and buddy Mark Skaggs also has a Terry Leonard stock in California redwood.
Beautiful rifle! Mark says "it will dent just looking at it" so I try not to admire it to much.

Hopefully I did Terry Leonard proud on what very well may be his last finished by him stock.
I know the clear is tough as nails and will hopefully provide Cory with many years of service and protection for his stock.

Junipers are the National Tree of the Texas Hill country.

You got that right! I have my eye on 30-40 that have to come down and that will barely make a dent in them. I’m going to cut some of the bigger ones into lumber, just to see if it has a use.

Fence posts and furniture.

Just remember it takes a few years to dry and cure. My LV is redwood and kevlar laminate. The redwood did not weigh all the same. The specialty wood house let Al Flores go through their inventory weighing planks. Made a big difference.

Yep you called it, they look like bushes on steroids. they get hard and brittle when dry

Phil, If you can sneak onto the back of my old place go through the gate and bear SE you will find a three foot diameter Juniper tree. I was clearing and just could not bring myself to cut it down. Both of the new owners work so you should be able to get it... lol..
