John Update.

First off sorry I took a vacation. The traveling with John then my vol work with FarmAid kicked my butt more than I was anticipating. Still no excuse for not keeping John's "uncles" updated.

NRA- John did pretty good seeing he had never shot a Dewar before and just followed what everybody else did. He had a riser screw strip out, but Newt from Akron stepped in and helped. Such a good guy. John finished 26 overall and 6th in juniors, but he was the only one with less than a year on smallbore.

He was able to go back in NJROTC this year. His team finished 8-1 with John being 1st or 2nd in each event. They also won Area 3 at Perry, Area 3 postal, and N. KY/S. IN (the Louisville metro area) season championship. They will be going to Phoenix AZ for Navy Nationals. John has an outside chance of winning. I don't agree with Gunner their coach giving Dec. off, but that's just my opinion. John will be shooting here and at the club regardless. He also won the Indiana State Rifle and Pistol Association 3p in sporter, as well as smallbore with some position medals.

John shot at Akron with a 93 standing Air average and had a smoker going in smallbore with a 198 in prone and a 190 something in kneeling, but had a shoe blowout. I was able to fix the shoe, but mentally he shut down and choked out his standing.

I decided he needed new shoes so I choked out for a good pair of boots. It's helped because his practice and comp scores in NJROTC have gone up to a 95 average real close to a 96.

Two weeks ago he scored a 1116 in 3x40 smallbor, bbut he had shot 3 events that week. The day before he had gone to Morehead, but did not shoot well at all. He is having a hard time right now. I'd say it's fatigue, but 3 weeks ago one of his school friends, a senior in his class died in a car accident. John and Thomas grew up from peewee through high school together. I know that has taken a toll on him. Also no Colleges looking at him is bothering him. I told him to forget about them, it wasn't the end of the world, we'd find a way for him to go to college. He said he just felt the world was on his shoulders when he was shooting. So I told him to take a step back, make it fun again. He has a JO qualifier in 2 weeks in KY, and normally I'd be on him to polish up, but this time I letting him go with Ted Malone who's been mentoring him, sort of a boys day out. He asked what if he doesn't qualify to go to Colorado, I said there is always next year.

I think looking at everything he's been through his plate was pretty full and he was afraid to disappoint anyone. I just want him to get back to the fun again. When he walks into a range with his NJROTC team he is smiling and you can see the confidence. Like nobody can touch me. When you see that side of him watch out cause he's getting a medal. Hopefully hanging out with Ted and relaxing about college he will get back to where I know he can shoot. It would be great if they can top 3 in Phoenix because they will be eligible to go to Perry for All Services Championship.

OK so there is your John Update. Now some mom bragging pictures. Oooooo by the way he took 2nd in the State in pairs ventage Sniper. His first time ever shooting. You should be and obviously are very proud of this outstanding young man, it’s so easy for young people to become distracted and misled in today’s world. As a parent keeping them focused and headed in the right direction is a full time job that many take for granted, you’ve managed to do a wonderful job under tough conditions with the cards stacked against you as in today’s society many are.

Good job Mom”

Thanks but I can't take the credit for most of that, John is a good kid. Living in small town USA does not offer kids much of a future, but he has always know he wanted to be a pilot. I think now that it's time to pick and afford a college he is feeling the pressure. I have always taught him if there is a will there is a way. It will work out. I appreciate all your alls help with John. And for you veterans out there John did color guard on veterans day, he was proud to be asked to do it, and I'm sure his grandpa in heaven was proud of him as well. A lot of us here grew up in small towns and we made our own futures. John can too. Though I no longer live in a small town, my small town ethics have made my life richer for it.
I’m sure his grandpa in heaven is as proud of him as we are.
Looks like you’re doing just fine!

Thanks for the update. I was thinking about how he had been doing just yesterday. Just know that one day John will have to move where the jobs are in his chosen field. That will be a little hard on mom...

Yep, thinking of college is killing me, but you raise them to let them go. Hope you give them the tools to make it in life. Even if he lives in God forbid California I know he will still come home. We have a good bond.

I mean I am born and bread in Kentucky and I did a college visit to Ohio State with John, it doesn't get anymore dedicated than that. Ohio State is where John would really like to go, but they only have 1 place left with 5 people in the wings. John is one of the 5, but long odds. Still I step on the Campus. Unholy ground for a wildcat. No it will be ok, John will figure it out.

I was born and raised in WV... My folks moved across the river to the Ohio side. I refuse to say I am going to Ohio to visit them. I still say WV.. lol.. I approve of any job choice for John with the exception of one in California. lol.. No one should have to move there.. lol.. Keep us posted every few months, we realize the winter time is on the slow side for our sport..
