Buying a used barrel

I have the opportunity to purchase a premium barrel at a great price.

Before I pull the trigger I want to be sure it will work with my components.

the barrel came off a Stiller tac 300 with a .300 recoil lug.

Is it possible to install this barrel on a rem 700 that currently has a .250 recoil lug? Would I need to get a .300 lug?

is there anything else I should consider?

thanks for your help!

If you use the .250 lug very possible you may have to rechamber it a little deep, and probably even redo the cone and shank length, I don't recall the shank lengths on a stiller action.

If a .300 lug is used would the chamber have to be altered?
Maybe, you will need to check the headspace to be sure. If it is off it shouldn't take much cutting to correct it. If you have headspace gauges you can check it before installing the barrel.

A .300" lug will get you close but there is a 90%+ chance you'll have to adjust the HS. That means adjusting the counterbore at the same time as the Remington nose is .010" longer than the Stiller.

Thanks for all the replies!

I should clarify-this isn’t something I am attempting myself. Just curious if a competent smith should be able to make the barrel work before purchasing it.

Some things to think about, first what is "Premium barrel at a Great Price?" If you are already considering sending this barrel to a gunsmith for fitting, what is the length of the barrel? It may be that it would be best to set it back and rechamber and headspace to your action. If this barrel was removed after just 50 rounds it probably didn't shoot and you stand a better chance in bringing it to life by setting it back. So back to the intro quote, is it worth the cost vs starting with a known?

It is chambered in 338 edge. Original owner couldn’t handle the recoil so he had it pulled.

it is a chambered carbon proof that I have the opportunity to buy at less than half price of a new, unchambered barrel.

claims it shoots right around half moa.

I figured if I could make it work on my action with minimal work from a smith I would still be ahead.

again, thanks for all the replies guys. Much appreciated!

You can send your action to us at work an get a premium barrel installed for 580 plus shipping an it cost an extra 35 if we thread the muzzle for let's say 5/8ths x 24 tpi.PS it won't be a carbon fiber barrel though.

You also need to check and see if the shank is long enough before the barrel steps down to even rechamber it. An edge will use most if not all of the proof shank available

Some valid things to think about. Sounds like I may be better off just starting new.

that is why this place is awesome-so many good guys willing to help out guys like me with amateur hour questions.

thanks much guys.
