How much barrel length

I was wondering how big of barrel can I put on Rem 700 long action my blank is 1.250 . I am planning to bed 3 inches in front of recoil lug . Would .300 '' recoil lug be better ?

1. As long as you can chamber. I've hung a lot of 1.25" 31" barrels out there no problem. Current F-open rifle is 32" straight on rem action.
2. Don't bed in front of the recoil lug unless you want POI to change as you heat up.
3. no. Thicker lugs don't make the joint stronger. there are some subtle effects but no change to barrel weight capacity.

Ok thank you . I will probably end up around 29 30 inch range . Do you bed the barrel channel in front of the lug ?

A lug around .200 would be sufficient ; no bedding under the lug bottom or in front lug in barrel channel touching tthe barrel. Float it.

Layer of tape be good for front , bottom of lug . I might switch gears and move up to Stiller single shot TAC 300 for my action . I would use a chassis if bedding the barrel wont bother it .

To each their own...

When it comes to long, heavy bull contour barrels I usually do bed the chamber area only of the barrel. I have never noticed any negative effects from this on harmonics, barrel whip/vibration is will obviously be minimal just ahead of the barrel/receiver junction.

I do believe that it can't hurt to have some additional support in this area when hanging ten pounds of barrel off the face of the receiver.
