Did I ruin my sizer die

I'm new to reloading and did not notice my shell holder was not properly positioned so when I raised the ram it shoved the case incorrectly into the die. When I shine a light into the die I can see a small gouge at the shoulder of the die. Should I buy a new one? It's a basic RCBS full length die so a new one isn't much money. When I used it after it's leaving a small mark on the shoulder of the brass.

RCBS will replace just about anything at no charge. Give them a call.

I think your seeing some brass smeared in the die unless you had a steel case you tried to resize. Hit it with bore cleaner if it was a brass case and it should wipe right out, then re-lube. Even if you had everything adjusted correctly new dies sometimes like to smear even with good lube.

You may be seeing the vent hole - it's put there to allow excess lube a way out, as well as trapped air.

Thanks guys. So much to learn! It’s a bit overwhelming at times. Seems like there are 10 different ways to do the same thing at every turn. Hard to distinguish between the “right way” vs “personal preference” vs “best way”. I can say I don’t love the RCBS die. It’s a pain to get my bump to exactly .002. I like the idea of the Whidden click adjustable die but reviews are not good.

Go to the redding site and check out their comp shell holders.They work great for getting the shoulder bump that you desire. Easy to set up your die with these.

I forget who made them, but there are little paper stickers you can put on your press with graduations showing 0.0005" increments as you adjust the die. Might help you a bit with the fine tuning. Also, rather than adjusting your die to a specific number, you can just start backed off and check it in your chamber, just turn it down a little each time until it chambers smoothly, then measure to make sure you didnt go too far.

I have pma tools on my 2 match dies.
they screw on the die and make it easy to sneak up on shoulders without tools.

Skip's Die shims also make it easy to change die adjustments without loosening the lock ring. Just set up with a mid-range thickness shim and you can then go either thicker or thinner as needed. Great when you have more than one gun of same caliber but with different chamber dimensions.
