This sport on a budget

This is where I got my ''stuff''. I have 3 bench rifles.
#1 is a 30br, it was a used xr100 and a friend gave me a used 30br barrel. It shoots very well.
#2 is a used 6ppc Panda with a new Hart barrel.
#3 is also a used Panda with a Wheeler barrel.
I have bought once fired brass, surplus custom bullets, used scopes, used front and rear rests. All of my reloading stuff is second hand except some dies and a $20 digital scale. I even built my bench from scrap lumber lol
proof you can have fun on a budget.

Budget, yea, as in throw your wallet over the counter and ask "What will that get me?"

Truth is the guns and scopes are the cheap part. I took delivery of about 18 months worth of reloading supplies last month (4000 Berger bullets, a case of 4 jugs of VV powder and 1000 Lapua cases), and I dropped my guns off with 3 new barrels. That adds up to more than anything listed in the classifieds this week, and most of it ends up in the berm.

In any precision rifle shooting sport, precision equals money. The only question is how precise do you want to be. To be competitive, you need a good quality rifle, a good smith to put it together, really good glass, good reloading equipment and top notch components. That all equals $$$. Without it you may have fun and you might shoot good but I don't think you'll be competitive.

Yeah and I will bet you shoot better than you ever did with ole wal mart 700 and shells. Enjoy. Life is good.

As has been said many times this is a game of consumables which makes it tough to do it ok the cheap. Matches cost money but even more money can be spent practicing for those matches. Heck I spent $1,500 just on the three barrels I’ve shot out this year plus another $1,000 on the two I just got back from my gunsmith. I bought four barrels from Earl at Nationals and with two spun up already I’ll probably burn through those before the end of next year. Then add in that I shot well north of 4,000 rounds of .284 this year and those loads alone are nearly $4,000 on their own once I cost out the reloading. I’ll easily spend another $3000-$4000 in fees/travel/food/lodging for matches per year. Then add in all the other ancillary charges and we are talking a chunk of change.

Once you commit to shooting at the highest level possible it isn’t about the money anymore. You just swipe the cards and worry about shooting.

If you’re just shooting for fun then that’s a whole different story and budgetary corners can be cut all day long.

Both are fine but just recognize what you’re trying to accomplish.

My first hobby/obsession was hot rod cars. The shooting gig is a fart in a whirlwind compared to that cash guzzler.

I remember those days, then bikes and boats somewhere in between shooting sports. My hobbies caused me to be on a budget.
Just when I thought it was over and I could stick with shooting my son got into MX and can go through 125 engines quicker than I can go through 220 swift barrels. How horrible would life be without hobbies.
