22rf benchrest build. What rcvr?

View attachment 1133834 View attachment 1133835

@MrG52D ... I have been competing a little more than 2 years with 10 to 15 rim fire matches thus far.

I am familiar with the scoring system and I also shoot groups just to test ammo lot consistency. I practice on the same 25 bull's eye target for International bench rest that we use to compete.

My typical match score is from 246 to 248 out of a possible 250 with 13 to 21 x's out of a possible 25. Of the 10 shooters that regularly compete I am Almost always in the upper half and have numerous 1st seconds and thirds

Thanks for the helpful information.

Garandman, Just curious is this the target you guys shoot in those matches?

Yes. Easier than some. But sufficiently challenging for me. :)

As I said above, I frequently win the X count but have about 2 to 3 shots that are just wickedly wild ... 2-3 eights or nines.

I believe it is a lack of concentration issue. Need to work on that.

Probably not lack of concentration, but not being able to watch your flags 100% of the time since you are shooting off a bi-pod. even shooting with both eyes open and trying to hold on the target and watch flags is not easy. every time I get caught by the condition I was looking thru the scope when I took the shot, that is the advantages of shooting off a rest, you can be heads up and just watching your flags when you shoot.

They wont let me shoot the bipod anymore. The require a front sandbag, so I made this...

But you are correct that I am in the process of learning how to both see the wind flag and sight the rifle.

(FTR: I have won several matches and regularly get 2nd and 3rd place using my trusty bi pod. I suspect thats why they disallowed it.Lol)

Some helpful advice learn to shoot without looking thru the scope and only watching your flags it will be be hard at first but your scores will improve and those 8's will become 9's and 9's into 10's with 250 a common thing
Got to go for now

Good advice. Thanx.

And as I understand it (I could be wrong) that's exactly what you want to do in a pure benchrest match.

I have four goals:
  • My first perfect 250 card (with many many x's)
  • Always be in the top 3
  • Learn to read wind very well
  • Do all this with a more PRS style, not pure benchrest.

I'm competetive now, as is. But I can get better.

This kinda demonstrates the 2-3blown shots per match:

20191025_092530.jpg 20191025_092512.jpg

247- 248 with 19 and 21 x's.

If I can fix those 2 to 3 brain farts and maintain my x count ... I will consider that a success

I measured the 9-ring - 0.70" outside - to- outside, or "worst edge." That's 0.48 center-to- center. My rifle ammo *is* capable of that, every time. I, as yet, am not.:mad::)o_O

But I one day will be. :):D

Lee is correct, using the bi-pod is not the way to go outdoors, watching the flags is way more important than looking through the scope.

This is pure personal opinion, not a slam of anyone else, more a personal quirk / freakiness of my own, but....

Looking at the flags rather than thru the scope seems cheesy / lazy / cheating to me...to have a rest so securely hold the rifle that I don't even have to sight thru it when squeezing the trigger?

That's not for me. I like the challenge of doing both. That's why I say....I'm not really a pure benchrest guy. Tho I have total respect for ppl who are. Its just not for me. I'd rather place 2nd thru 5th sighting both the flags *and* target than win a match where a micrometer adjustable rest holds the gun that securely.

Again... no offense to anyone else. *I* am the weirdo. :)

And again... I'm placing 1st thru 3rd with regularity, now, so...

I compete against me, and my previous match scores, really. How I stack up against others is interesting, but secondary.

If my club changed a rule just to handycap me I'd find another club.

They say its a rule - rule. That its a "sandbag" match... requiring front and rear sandbags. I'm a slacker. I've never cared enuf to actually read the rules. lol :)

Garandman, that's just sad. I shoot all mine off bi-pods. Here is something that may help you a little. After each shot, upset the rifle by raising the butt stock off the rear sandbag after you have moved to the next bull. Then re-position to align with the bull. This helps remove any stress that was on the stock, make sure your rear bag is straight before each shot. It took me a good long while to get away from what your experiencing, however I do manage to screw it up once in awhile anyway.

Now that your using a front bag, your going to have to adapt to using it. Make sure the bipod stud is removed, it will cause a problem. I use to shoot IR50 10.5 and 13 lb class, I used a simple Hoppes rest for awhile, but I much preferred my bi-pod. Here are pix of one of my rifles, yes the bi-pods work, target was shot inside a Piney Hill last year in a 10 shot money match, prior to the IR Nationals.

You know, it is really pretty easy to do both.
Most guys I know simply shoot with both eyes open, rt through the scope, lft down range @flags, easy, no eye strain.

Really you don’t look through the scope ? It would be impossible to shoot a CF group match like that.
Maybe because that’s where I started it has become pretty natural.

Im learning how... but it is doable. Its my preferred method. If ever I master it.... :) ;)

Tim, at 200yds. + I would imagine you could see your flags in your scopes FOV and at that distance would be pretty hard to red flags without some aid.

On the flip side of what you said, I want to be able to know that a miss was all me and not my equipment. reading conditions is a very hard skill to learn. I seen guys go home and not shoot in a match because the wind was blowing too hard didn't want to waste ammo IMO you never waste ammo if you learned something. I had at least 2 maybe 3 matches canceled while I was waiting to setup because MD decide it was too windy.
IMO shoot anytime and every time and you will learn something always.

typically @ 200 yards, you can see your last 2 flags in the scope if you set that way but that is it, it still requires both eyes open, left on flags, right through scope.
Be it 100 or 200 most guys stack their flags so when looking down range it looks like one right on top of closer....all the way out.
You have to always look through the scope, especially @200 because, often you need to both finish a 5 shot group in 20 seconds but also make small adjustments with the joystick to keep them in the group.
Gotta remember however, most CF flags are a lot bigger than RF.

I thought this thread was about actions. It has turn into what target to shoot thread. Lets get back on track. He wants an 8 hundred dollar action to shoot BR. Lets find him one
