Yes when I saw it I was confused it just looked like any other Remington 700. Remington traditionally just does a saw cut at the reciever face they are not truing that up on a lathe at Remington. So I could not see anything out of the ordinary.

Depending on what your using the action for you do not need custom BR levels of clearances, concentricity, tolerance stacking etc....Many non-BR shooting sports have been won with a terrible factory Remington 700 with not much more than front receiver faced and lugs lapped even in F-Class!

Not every contest outside of BR can be won buy tossing money at a problem!

Sometimes it is cheaper to buy an action designed for the intended purpose but not always. Spending too much time on a sight like this full of expeerts with deep pockets can ruin you and make you give up before you have even tried!

Even in BR you still have to put in the time shooting, loading, reading the wind etc.....BR though is like Formula 1 racing it just can not be done on a budget if you want to do more than just show up!

I’m not in total agreement with Mauser 284. I’ve seen Remington 700 place very well at BR events , I’m not an expert just observation.

Many of the top guys in LR BR are middle class guys without deep pockets. I was competitive on a budget. You cant buy a win in lr BR, but if you show up with the best tuned rifle your chances are pretty good!

I have 3 requirements for my bolt ...

1. Chambers a live round.

2. Extracts a spent case.

3. Runs smoothly.


Beyond that, I don't guess I care.

Some people that post here seem to be under the impression this is Benchrest Shooter forum.

That's all they ever talk about. Every thread gets pulled into "that won't work in serious benchrest"

"If you can't compete at the Benchrest blah blah whatever contest with it why bother using it? I won this blah blah whatever benchrest competition so everyone listen to me on everything shooter related because we all know that benchrest shooters are the most accurate shooters... blah blah blah"

I'm not even sure they realize that there are literally millions of rifle shooters completely content not shooting competitive benchrest. Or even know anyone who does it. You would be hard pressed to find a serious benchrest match in my area. Much less 1000 yard benchrest, which is crazy rare.

No offense meant. Just an observation from watching this forum.

Actually Dan Armstrong is in Fairbanks. He is the "MAN" when it comes to the Remington for timing and extraction.

The handles are cast. They have used the same mold and the same soldering fixture for many many years. It puts them in the same wrong spot every time

Yeah, I mean I get the whole Ferrari cream puff/Chevy schitt box argument....but hasn't Remington been making guns for a few years now?? Don't they claim the title of "America's oldest gunmaker"?? Don't the pistons fit reasonably well in a Chevy, like they do in Ferrari in spite of the price spread??
Come on "Big Green" you been making guns for some 200 odd years now!!! Looks like to me you could have at least gotten this bolt handle location thing nailed down by now!!!!!

I am curious to hear the answer to this also, I can't think of any connection of bolt handle timing and the bolt not fitting a chassis.

I understand, but we all have different desires. I am more in line with building, machining, and doing my own tools. I'm not a gun range whore. If my deer rifle shoots less than 1 moa with a cold, hot, dirty, or clean barrel everytime, I don't waste anymore supplies.
Actually the money spent on a top of the line custom is actually a small part of a comp shooters yearly expense. I built my custom carbon fiber-redwood laminated Bat action rifle about 15years or so ago. Other than a few replacement barrels, it has only cost me 1 time. All of the supplies, traveling, food, drinks, and entry fees go on all the time.
You don't see any competitors shooting a factory receiver type rifle in serious competition. It will cost as much to buy and truly bring a factory receiver to close to a custom.
garadman, go for what pleases you. You only have to satisfy yourself, not the rest of us.

He told me to take a dremal tool to cut my tube gun Chassis to give enough clearance for the bolt to fit. When I refused to cut my $1000 tube gun chassis and sent him pictures, he said it looks like I need a ruger m77 bolt handle for my Remington 700.

The bolt handle he used was some tactical odd shaped handle. The tig work was fine, but the customer service was such that I just ordered a factory bolt from Brownells and deal with the no primary extraction.

Without a pic I wouldn't know. I do not have that problem with my Eliseo and can't picture in my mind how a new handle could have enough difference in clocking and still function.

No, it won’t even slide in the Chassis. It don’t function. On a traditional stock it would be fine. Anyway, way off topic, I’m over it. $200 lesson
