Seems we had this discussion a while back. Seems Remington forgot how their actions were supposed to work. No primary extraction. No clue at Remington. Did you check the contact on the lugs? Get some machinist blue and paint the back side of the lugs with it. Then insert the bolt and open/close a number of times. In addition to the timing issue with no primary extraction, the last action I bought had only a scratch across one of the lugs. 5 percent contact at best. Hard to believe they could produce a product like that.

I dont even waste time investigating. Every remington ive seen over 20+ years needs the same thing

Then again there have been comments here that Rem 700 actions are good enough as is that they don't need truing, etc.
BTW, with CNC available what's to stop someone else from producing them the way they are supposed to be produced? Any patent protection should have expired long ago.

On this forum’s home page is a brief summery of custom action, and some of those actions are built on the Remington pattern, and as a side note, all the after market replacement triggers to replace the Remington, Walker, Liability law suit trigger, to which that is a whole other discussion in its self.

Some $hit boxes, as they refer to them, can be damn fine. However, they'll never offer the whole package of speed, handling and comfort of a super car.
Imo, it's nice to have the option to build one. You can do more and more to make it nice as can be as you go. Eventually you may turn it into a super hunting rifle and compete with a custom, or not. The dual port option is tough to beat in some disciplines. By then you'll know what you need to know.

Can't they tinker with the CNC program to eliminate some of these issues so that the action is made "right the first time"?

Remington 700 bolts are not made from one piece on a CNC. The bolt handle is a separate piece that is silver soldered on.

I grew up a “Remington Man”. So, it hurts me to say it, but if you want to build on a factory action, try the Tikka T3.

CNC is only as good as the fixturing. A small chip in the fixture can be enough to get things out of whack.

Actually the bolt head is a separate piece from the bolt body itself, the bolt body and the bolt head are joined together during the manufacturing process. Just another thing to go wrong when tolerances are a bit out of spec in the wrong direction.
To Remingtons credit the bolt body and bolt head are usually joined well enough that the seam is not noticably visible but I have seen a few where the seam was clearly visible.

How likely is a custom bolt to fit with near 100% lug contact?

I don't know what this quote means either... tho the fact your post reminded me of it is a scary look into my mind ....

The shop where I used to work does Remington factory repair work. We do over 1,000 repairs annually but certainly not all on 700's. In the last 5 years I cannot remember a single 700 being returned for not enough primary extraction. While there is almost .100 available if everything is set up perfectly, you don't need .100 of primary extraction, if you do then you have one of the worst chambers ever installed. My Barnard for instance, has only .045 primary extraction and it has never failed to extract a case. As Dusty said, you can pull a Remington bolt back and clear the locking lugs without hitting the primary extraction cam. If extracting a fired case the bolt does not come back when it clears the locking lugs, it will continue closed on the case until it hits the primary extraction and then start to extract the case. Flame away if you like but I cannot get onto the "bash the Remingtons" bandwagon just because everything isn't set perfect.

If the raceway is reamed, and the bolt body is the correct diameter, and the lug abutments are trued then itll be a sure thing. Without doing all the other things nothing falls into place
