284 win vs 7 shehane

Or for those who have to fireform a lot of brass, you could try Trail Boss powder. To form Shehane I run around 14gns with old pulled 180s. You can fire 100 shots fairly quickly without heating up your barrel or causing throat erosion. You wouldn't want to shoot a match with these loads, but if you have somewhere to just plink away, it is easy and not too noisy. If you are running in a new barrel, it wont copper up much with Trail Boss loads either. It is such a bulky powder that 14gns will 2/3rd fill a 284.

DJ,
Definitely less expensive than fireforming.

thanks,
Jerry
No doubt hydro forming is a great option when time is limited. I don't think it's cheaper than fire forming tho. When your current Shehane barrel is toast, use it to fire form brass. I figure it would cost about .35-.50 to fire form whatever brass you would need formed, depending on which bullets you used. Other plus is, you'll get trigger time behind a rifle. Granted it's not the barrel you'll shoot but it's trigger time all the same. I think using 100 pieces of brass to fire form will last close to the life of a barrel if it's good brass and not run too hot. 100 rounds is basically a break in period for a barrel. I enjoy fire forming while breaking in and aquiring accuracy from my new barrel

Of the 4-5 guys I know that shoot 284’s they have all gone back to straight 284’s and said the Shehane wasn’t worth the extra work. And pretty much all of these guys are state championship level shooters.

Yep, 54grs of H4831SC and the 180 Hybrid in my 28" Criterion .284 Win yields 2800 fps and small groups, never considered a Shehane.

A 20 Vartarg doesn't get hot and it's easily the best cartridge there ever was! And yes, that was meant to be a bit cheeky; I just like my 20 Vartarg so much. Shoot 50 rounds as fast as you please and the barrel is just warm to the touch!

I generally equate powder charge with heat if pressures are similar. 55 vs 56gns of powder isn't going to do diddly to reduce heat. I do know that reduced loads produce way less heat in several of my rifles. Have you, for giggles, tried loading it to 2500fps or thereabouts and seeing if it makes a big enough difference across a string? That's not exactly a competitive strategy really, but it would keep the barrel cooler, I'd wager!

I'm considering building a straight 284. Never really felt like the shehane was worth the time and money. I think a 300WSM is the next clear step up from a straight 284 if you're looking for an advantage on a windy day.

And I just realized this thread is a bit old and @carlsbad doesn't really need me telling him this....

Wow!

A lot is being made of fire forming Shehane brass. It's only .010 bigger in the shoulder.
54 grains of 4831 SC and your favorite 180 and go! They will shoot better than most of us.
Next time give them your full charge.
Totally agree. Shoot new brass in a match...your scores before "fireforming" will be just as good as after. I put quotes around it because there is just not much to fireforming shehane. If you compare a Shehane case to a 284 WIN case, the naked eye can't tell the difference.

I'm surprised that someone who knows their way around a lathe would make such a statement. I can easily see .010" diametral difference on something so small. Maybe you just haven't spent enough time in machine shops.

Possibly what @Scott Harris meant is if I handed you one or the other individually, it would be tough to tell the difference. Hold them side by side and you can both see and feel the difference.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I cannot speak to Scott's intent, only what he wrote. The difference is obvious, both shoulder diameter and body taper, whether comparative or single.

OK. I've decided to go straight 284 for 2 reasons:

1. avoid fireforming.
2. Not pushing the shehane hard enough to justify it.

Thanks for all your help. I'll probably end up at the same velocity with the 284.

I went the other way. 7 Walker. To be able to run in the same node but at leas pressure. After having a Shehane that shot primer pockets loose in three loads.

I’ll eventually get a hydraulic form die. In the mean time, I’ll fire form but not in my competition barrel and not at competition pressure.

What is the difference between the Shehane and the Walker? Shoulder angle?

That’s basically it. The Walker is, essentially, a Shehane Ackley Improved.

I don’t want anything from it other than a bit lower pressure.
